Using the thigh as your Mounjaro leg injection site

Step 1: Prepare the site and gather what you need

Before anything touches your skin, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. Take the Mounjaro KwikPen from the fridge and allow it to come closer to room temperature for a few minutes — the injection is noticeably more comfortable that way. Do not warm it under hot water or in direct sunlight; just let it rest.

Check the pen window: the liquid should be clear or very slightly yellow, with no floating particles. If it looks cloudy or discoloured, do not use it, contact your prescriber or the pharmacy.

Clean the skin at the injection site with an alcohol swab and let it dry completely before you inject. Injecting onto damp skin can sting. Step 2: Locate the correct area on the thigh

Sit or lie in a relaxed position so the thigh muscle is not tensed. The correct zone is the outer or middle portion of the upper thigh, roughly the top third of the leg, between mid-thigh and hip, and to the outer side of the central line. Avoid the inner thigh, the area directly above the knee, and the groin crease. These areas have more sensitive skin, more nerve endings, or inadequate subcutaneous (under-skin) fat depth for the injection to work properly.

If you carry less fat in the thigh, gently pinch a fold of skin between your thumb and forefinger before inserting the needle. This lifts the subcutaneous layer and reduces the chance of the medicine going into muscle rather than fatty tissue. Step 3: Inject and rotate correctly

Hold the KwikPen firmly against the skin at roughly a 90-degree angle, or around 45 degrees if you have pinched a fold. Press the button and hold it in place until the dose indicator window shows the injection is complete, then keep the pen pressed for an additional ten seconds before removing it. This matters. Removing the pen too quickly can mean part of the dose escapes from the injection channel rather than absorbing into the tissue.

After removing the pen, apply gentle pressure with a clean finger or cotton ball for a few seconds. Do not rub the site, rubbing can speed local absorption unevenly. Dispose of the used pen immediately in a proper sharps bin; used KwikPens are medical waste and should not go into household bins or recycling.

For your next injection, move the insertion point at least two centimetres from the spot you just used, still within the upper outer thigh, but shifted slightly. The week after that, switch to the other thigh. This rotation pattern is the single most effective thing you can do to prevent the skin thickening (lipohypertrophy) that can slow absorption over time. Choosing between the thigh and the other two licensed sites

Some people find they genuinely feel a difference depending on where they inject. The abdomen tends to be easiest for self-injection and is the most commonly used site. The upper arm, by contrast, usually requires a second person to inject reliably and is less practical for most people week to week. The thigh sits in between: entirely self-injectable, but requiring a slightly more deliberate technique than the abdomen because the subcutaneous fat layer can be thinner.

The honest answer is that any of the three licensed sites works, and you may settle on a preference after a few weeks of rotating. One thing worth knowing: you can rotate across sites as well as within them. For instance, you might use the abdomen one week, the left thigh the next, the right thigh the week after. What the SmPC recommends against is using the same spot on the same thigh repeatedly without moving. Clinically, the thigh is as effective as any other site when used with proper rotation, there is no evidence that one location produces better weight-loss results than another.
