Mounjaro Prescriptions: Separating Fact from Common Myth

Mounjaro is a Prescription-Only Medicine (POM) in the UK; clinical assessment by a qualified prescriber is required before any supply.
Private Mounjaro prescriptions are legal and regulated, a GPhC-registered pharmacy can dispense them without a GP referral, provided a licensed prescriber approves the treatment.
NHS Mounjaro prescriptions follow a phased eligibility framework set by NICE; most people accessing treatment privately do so because they fall outside current NHS criteria or prefer not to wait.
Prescriptions for weight management can only cover licensed use, adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above alongside at least one weight-related health condition.

Getting a Mounjaro prescription in the UK requires a clinical assessment by a qualified prescriber — there is no other legal route. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a Prescription-Only Medicine, meaning a registered clinician must evaluate your health, weight and history before any supply can happen. That process protects you; it also happens to be straightforward when you go through a properly regulated service. What makes it confusing is the volume of misinformation around how prescriptions for this medicine actually work — so let's clear that up first.

How Mounjaro prescriptions work in practice, and why the process matters

The biggest myth: a prescription is just a formality you tick off

Many people come to this topic believing the prescription is a bureaucratic hoop, something a website hands out automatically once you've clicked a few boxes. That belief is both widespread and wrong, and it's worth addressing directly because acting on it can be dangerous.

A Mounjaro prescription is a clinical decision, one where a qualified prescriber reviews your weight, your medical history, any medicines you already take, and whether Mounjaro is appropriate for you specifically. For some people it won't be, a history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, certain gastrointestinal conditions, or pregnancy are among the circumstances where the prescriber will not approve treatment. That review isn't a delay or an obstacle; it's the reason a legitimate prescription has any value at all.

The sellers to be wary of are those who make the prescription feel like nothing, a checkbox on a checkout page with no real clinical review behind it. The MHRA has repeatedly warned the public about fake and illegally sold weight-loss pens circulating online, some found to contain entirely the wrong active ingredient. A prescription from a properly regulated source, issued after genuine assessment, is what separates a safe supply from a gamble. You can verify any UK online pharmacy on the GPhC register before you proceed anywhere.

Private prescriptions for Mounjaro: who issues them and how

On the private route, you do not need a GP referral. An Independent Prescriber (a clinician holding the relevant qualification and registered with their professional regulator) can assess and prescribe directly. At nume, every consultation is reviewed personally by a GPhC-registered Independent Prescriber. A real clinician reads your answers; no algorithm makes the call.

The consultation covers the same ground a GP would cover: BMI, weight-related conditions, current medications, contraindications and your goals. If approved, a prescription is issued and the medicine is dispensed from our GPhC-registered UK pharmacy through the licensed supply chain. If you're ordering before noon on a working day, dispatch goes out the same day once the prescriber is satisfied, your pen arrives the next working day via tracked DPD, in plain packaging.

Timing does come up in practice: orders placed just after a bank holiday, on the first working day of the month, or around payday tend to be busier, worth bearing in mind if you need treatment to land on a particular day. The noon cut-off applies Monday to Friday on standard working days.

For a fuller picture of what the private prescription process involves step by step, the private Mounjaro prescription page covers it in detail. And if you're asking whether a specialist such as an endocrinologist could prescribe for you through another route, that question has its own answer here.

NHS prescriptions for Mounjaro: the phased rollout explained

Mounjaro received a positive recommendation from NICE in December 2024 (published as Technology Appraisal TA1026), and NHS England is rolling out access in stages. As of June 2025, people with a BMI of 40 or above and four or more of a defined set of weight-related conditions (high blood pressure, dyslipidaemia, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, or type 2 diabetes) became eligible. A second cohort covering BMI 35–39.9 with the same four-plus conditions opened in June 2026. Further expansions are planned through to 2027.

BMI thresholds are 2.5 kg/m² lower for people from South Asian, Chinese, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean backgrounds under this guidance.

Qualifying does not guarantee access immediately; patients must also take part in supported diet and activity programmes. Availability also varies by GP practice, since participation in the new GP prescribing contract is optional. Many people who meet some criteria but not all (or who simply cannot wait) come to a private pharmacy instead. Both routes are legitimate; they serve different circumstances.

If you want to understand exactly what the licensing rules say about who qualifies medically, this page on Mounjaro's prescription-only status lays out the licence criteria clearly.

What a Mounjaro prescription does and doesn't cover

A prescription for weight management covers Mounjaro in its licensed context: adults aged 18 and over with a BMI of at least 30, or at least 27 alongside a qualifying weight-related condition such as hypertension, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, prediabetes, or obstructive sleep apnoea. Under-18s are not covered by the licence. Treatment during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or when actively trying to conceive is not recommended; these are situations where a prescriber will not approve treatment.

The prescription does not include dosing instructions written specifically for you, those come through clinical review at each repeat, and the Patient Information Leaflet covers safe use in full. Dose decisions, titration timing and any changes sit with your prescriber, not with general guidance online. That's one reason the clinical review at every repeat order matters: it isn't a formality, it's the check that keeps treatment safe and appropriate as your weight changes.

Questions about cost are common at this stage. The Mounjaro overview page gives context on what private treatment includes; for a direct look at pricing across the market, the guide to buying Mounjaro covers what published prices typically do and don't include. One honest note from us: the single transparent price at nume covers the consultation, prescription, treatment and free next-working-day delivery, no subscription, no hidden fees, no auto-renewals.

If you have a query that isn't answered here, our FAQs and the contact page are both there. When you're ready to move forward, start your free consultation and a prescriber will review your case the same day.
