Start journey Learn moreWegovy's pre-filled injection pen uses a fixed, built-in needle — there are no separate needle tips to attach, no NovoFine Plus 32G 4mm cartridges to source, and no choice of gauge or length at the pharmacy. This distinction matters, because many people arriving from other injection devices (insulin pens, older GLP-1 formats) naturally expect to swap needles as they always have. With Wegovy, the pen and the needle are one unit, delivered together, used once, and disposed of whole. The NHS semaglutide medicines page describes the pre-filled pen format and notes that the device should be used exactly as the manufacturer directs. Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine; a prescriber decides whether it is suitable for you before any pen is issued.

The Wegovy pre-filled pen was designed from the ground up as a self-contained, auto-injection device. Novo Nordisk's product documentation, reflected in the SmPC held on the electronic Medicines Compendium (eMC), specifies that the pen must not be modified and that no external needle tips should be attached. The needle inside is already set at a gauge and depth chosen to deliver semaglutide subcutaneously across a wide range of body types. You do not tighten a cap onto the tip before injecting. You press the device against the skin, press the button, hold, and done.
NovoFine Plus 32G 4mm needles are a genuine Novo Nordisk product (thin-walled, 32-gauge, with a 4mm length well suited to subcutaneous injection) but they belong to a different part of the Novo Nordisk range. They are compatible with NovoPen, FlexPen and similar devices used for insulin and some older GLP-1 formulations. The Wegovy pen has a different mechanism entirely and cannot accept them. Searching for NovoFine Plus 32G 4mm in the context of Wegovy is a completely understandable query, particularly if you or someone in your household also manages type 2 diabetes with an insulin pen. The devices sit in similar territory, but they are not interchangeable.
The practical upshot: when your Wegovy pen arrives, everything you need is already inside the box. No separate needle order, no fitting, no length decision to make.
For people switching from detachable needles, the fixed format takes one task off the pre-injection checklist, which many find reassuring rather than limiting. The 4mm needle length used in devices like NovoFine Plus became the clinical standard for subcutaneous injection partly because it reliably reaches the subcutaneous fat layer without the risk of inadvertent intramuscular delivery, and Novo Nordisk applied the same evidence base when specifying the needle depth inside the Novo Wegovy pen. The STEP 1 trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, established the efficacy and tolerability profile of the 2.4mg semaglutide weekly injection across 68 weeks in nearly 2,000 adults, that entire dataset was generated using the pen format as currently licensed, not with detachable-tip devices.
Injection sites for Wegovy remain the same three areas that work for most subcutaneous injections: abdomen, outer thigh, or upper arm. Rotating between sites each week reduces localised skin reactions. The pen's auto-injection mechanism means depth and speed of delivery are consistent regardless of where on the body you inject, which is a meaningful practical advantage over manually operated pen devices where injection technique varies.

Because there is no needle tip to remove and discard separately, disposal is straightforward, but it still requires a sharps container. The used pen counts as sharps waste. Placing it in a standard household bin risks needle-stick injury further down the waste stream, and putting it in a recycling bin is not appropriate regardless of the plastic content.
Your local council or pharmacy can tell you where to drop off a full sharps container. Many pharmacies provide yellow bins free of charge; collection schemes vary by area, so it is worth asking at your first repeat. A 1-litre sharps container holds several weeks' worth of pens and fits in most bathroom cupboards.
One question our prescribers hear regularly from people moving to Wegovy from an insulin pen: what do you do with leftover NovoFine Plus needles? If those needles were bought for an insulin device that is still in use, they are still the right product for that device. If the insulin pen is no longer needed, unused needles can be returned to a pharmacy for safe disposal.
For cost context on private Wegovy treatment, the Wegovy price comparison page sets out what the UK private market looks like across different dose levels, including what a full-service price actually covers.
For anyone new to Wegovy, it helps to know what the process actually looks like end to end. Once a prescriber has reviewed your consultation and confirmed suitability, the pen is dispensed from a GPhC-registered pharmacy and sent by DPD on a next-working-day tracked service. It comes in plain, unbranded packaging, no logos on the outer box, nothing that identifies the contents to anyone other than you. The pen itself is pre-filled, pre-set, and stored at 2–8°C during transit; it should go straight into the fridge on arrival. The Patient Information Leaflet inside the box covers storage, the injection process, and missed-dose guidance in detail; the prescriber's advice and that leaflet together are your definitive reference for everything from first injection to dose changes.
If you are weighing up which semaglutide pathway suits your situation, the Wegovy treatment page explains the full dosing journey and eligibility picture, and the Novo Nordisk and Wegovy page covers the manufacturer's background for anyone who wants it. A broader look at weight-loss treatment options is also available if you are still comparing approaches, and if you are curious about what semaglutide plus combines with the active ingredient, that page sets out how the formulation differs from standard semaglutide products.
