Searching for an oral Mounjaro for weight loss? Here is what actually exists

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a subcutaneous injection; no oral tirzepatide weight-loss medicine is currently licensed in the UK.
An oral GLP-1 medicine for weight loss does exist in the UK as of summer 2026: Wegovy tablets (oral semaglutide), approved by the MHRA on 11 June 2026.
Tirzepatide activates two gut-hormone receptors (GIP and GLP-1), making it biologically distinct from semaglutide-based tablets.
Both Mounjaro and Wegovy tablets are prescription-only medicines; a prescriber must assess your health before either can be dispensed.

There is no oral version of Mounjaro. Mounjaro is a once-weekly injection, and tirzepatide — the active ingredient — is not currently available as an oral weight-loss tablet licensed in the UK. If you have seen references to oral tirzepatide for weight loss online, those relate to medicines in development or products from unregulated sources, neither of which you can safely obtain through a UK pharmacy right now. As a prescription-only medicine, any legitimate form of tirzepatide requires a clinical assessment before a prescriber can consider it for you.

What the injectable Mounjaro actually does, and why an oral version matters to you

You've heard there might be a tablet, here is what is actually available

The question makes complete sense. Oral GLP-1 medicines are now real, and readers researching weight loss are finding news stories about tablets sitting alongside articles about Mounjaro pens. So let's be direct: oral tirzepatide for weight loss is not licensed or commercially available in the UK at the time of writing. Mounjaro arrives as a pre-filled KwikPen, one injection per week, stored in the fridge. That is the only licensed tirzepatide weight-loss product you can lawfully obtain.

What is available as an oral option is Wegovy in tablet form. The MHRA approved oral semaglutide (Wegovy tablets) on 11 June 2026, making the UK the first country in Europe to license it for weight management. It is a different medicine from tirzepatide (a GLP-1 receptor agonist rather than the dual GIP and GLP-1 agonist that tirzepatide is) but it is a genuine, licensed, once-daily tablet for adults with obesity or overweight alongside a weight-related health condition. If the appeal of an oral route is the main thing drawing you to this search, that is worth knowing. The tirzepatide overview at nume explains the mechanisms in more depth if the biology interests you.

Meanwhile, if you specifically want to understand the injection experience, our team has put together practical detail on getting the most from Mounjaro treatment, including what injection day tends to look like week to week.

What Mounjaro's injection form does inside the body

Tirzepatide is the only licensed weight-loss medicine in the UK that works across two pathways simultaneously. It activates both the GIP receptor and the GLP-1 receptor, two gut hormones involved in appetite signalling and blood-sugar regulation. Together, they slow how quickly the stomach empties, reduce appetite, and affect how the brain processes hunger cues. The result, seen across the SURMOUNT clinical programme involving thousands of adults, was substantial: in the SURMOUNT-1 trial, participants on the highest dose lost around 20 to 21 percent of their body weight on average over 72 weeks, as published in the New England Journal of Medicine. NICE recommended tirzepatide for NHS use in December 2024 following a detailed review of that evidence.

Why does the delivery route matter biologically? For tirzepatide specifically, the injection format allows the full dose to enter the bloodstream predictably. Developing an oral version is technically challenging because the molecule needs to survive stomach acid and pass into circulation in adequate amounts, a problem that Novo Nordisk solved for semaglutide using an absorption enhancer called SNAC, but that Eli Lilly has not yet licensed for tirzepatide in a weight-loss tablet. Oral tirzepatide is being studied in trials, but nothing is approved in the UK yet. You can read more about how effective Mounjaro is for weight loss for a fuller look at the trial data.

Who the Mounjaro injection is actually licensed for

The NHS England guidance on weight-management injections sets out the licensed criteria clearly. For private treatment, Mounjaro is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27 or above alongside at least one weight-related health condition, for example, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol or obstructive sleep apnoea. Lower BMI thresholds apply for some ethnic backgrounds under UK guidance. A BMI figure alone does not determine approval: a prescriber reviews the full picture, including your medical history, current medicines and any conditions that might affect whether tirzepatide is appropriate for you.

It is not recommended during pregnancy, while breastfeeding, or if you are actively trying to conceive. It is not licensed for anyone under 18. If you take the oral contraceptive pill, there is a practical consideration: because tirzepatide slows gastric emptying, pill absorption may be reduced during the first four weeks of treatment and for four weeks after each dose increase. NHS guidance recommends adding a non-oral method of contraception during those windows. The NHS England guidance on weight-management injections covers this and other practical points in detail. For men specifically, there is separate detail available on Mounjaro and weight loss for men.

Getting the injection: what the process looks like at a private pharmacy

A question our prescribers hear regularly is whether the process is complicated. It is not. At nume, it starts with a free online consultation, your answers go to a GPhC-registered Independent Prescriber, a real clinician who reads them the same day. There are no algorithms making the call. Identity and weight are verified as part of the clinical process, and if treatment is appropriate your prescription is issued and the medicine is dispatched. Order before 12pm on a working day and it goes out the same afternoon. A plain, unbranded box arrives with DPD the next working day (trackable on your phone from dispatch) containing the KwikPen ready to refrigerate. No subscription, no auto-renewal. Every repeat order goes back through a prescriber before anything is sent.

The cost of private treatment is a genuine consideration, and a full breakdown of what Mounjaro costs privately in the UK covers the market context honestly, including what a legitimate price should include. If you want to understand all the treatment options available through nume (injection and tablet) the weight-loss treatments page is the right place to start. For a broader look at what Mounjaro is, the Mounjaro page covers the licensed medicine from the beginning.
