Ozempic Versus Wegovy for Weight Loss: What the Difference Actually Means

Step 2: Look at the actual evidence base for each product in weight management

Because Ozempic's trials focused on glycaemic control in people with type 2 diabetes, the weight-loss data sits inside those studies as a secondary finding. It is real data, but it was never designed to answer the question of how much weight a person without diabetes could expect to lose on semaglutide for that purpose alone.

Wegovy's evidence base is a different picture. The STEP 1 trial (published in the New England Journal of Medicine) enrolled 1,961 adults with obesity or overweight plus a weight-related condition but without diabetes. Over 68 weeks, participants on semaglutide 2.4mg achieved an average body-weight reduction of around 15%, compared with about 2.4% on placebo. That was the data that underpinned Wegovy's weight-management licence. The 7.2mg dose approved more recently showed around 20.7% average weight loss in trials at 72 weeks, narrowing the gap with tirzepatide.
