Semaglutide 7mg tablets for weight loss: clearing up a common mix-up

The 7mg tablet is a diabetes dose, this is the misconception worth correcting first

Rybelsus comes in three strengths: 3mg, 7mg, and 14mg. All three are semaglutide, and all three are licensed solely for type 2 diabetes management. The 3mg tablet is a starter dose used for the first month to improve tolerability. The 7mg follows as the first therapeutic step. The 14mg is the maximum maintenance dose for diabetes. The confusion is understandable. Both Rybelsus and Wegovy tablets contain semaglutide, made by Novo Nordisk, and both work by activating GLP-1 receptors to reduce appetite and slow gastric emptying. The molecule is the same. The licensed indications, dose strengths, formulations and clinical trial programmes are different. Searching for a 7mg weight-loss tablet and arriving at Rybelsus information is a quick way to end up with the wrong product in mind, or, if bought from an unlicensed source, literally the wrong product in hand.

What the Wegovy tablet dose schedule actually looks like

Wegovy tablets follow four steps: 1.5mg for the first month, 4mg for the second, 9mg for the third, and 25mg as the maintenance dose from month four onward. Each step lasts at least one month before the prescriber considers moving up. There is no 7mg rung. Most common side effects were gastrointestinal: nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting and constipation affected the majority of participants on the active tablet, though most cases were mild to moderate and settled as the body adjusted. The GI profile is consistent with semaglutide more broadly, and with GLP-1 medicines generally. Side effects tend to be most noticeable in the early weeks and after dose increases, then ease. Wegovy tablets are not suitable during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or when actively trying to conceive. They are not licensed for under-18s. Anyone with a history of pancreatitis, medullary thyroid carcinoma, or certain gastrointestinal conditions needs to discuss that history with a prescriber before starting.
