Where the BMI figures come from: the licensed criteria and the NICE recommendation

The BMI thresholds for semaglutide are not arbitrary. They come from two distinct but related frameworks: the product licence granted by the MHRA, and the separate recommendation issued by NICE that determines NHS access.

Why the prescriber looks beyond the number on the scale

Certain conditions rule the medicine out regardless of BMI. A personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, or a condition called MEN2, means semaglutide is not appropriate. Active pancreatitis, or a history of it, is another contraindication.
