Ozempic and Rybelsus, same molecule, different job

You'll see it mentioned frequently in media coverage of GLP-1 drugs, partly because it became widely available before Wegovy and partly because weight loss is a known side effect at the doses used for diabetes. Wegovy injection versus Wegovy tablet, choosing between two licensed routes

Since both the injection and the tablet now carry a UK weight-management licence, the practical question for many people is which form suits them better. The injection is once weekly and has a longer evidence base, the STEP 1 trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, reported an average body-weight reduction of around 15% over 68 weeks at the 2.4mg maintenance dose. The 7.2mg single-dose pen approved in April 2026 extends that further still, with trials reporting around 20.7% average loss over 72 weeks at the higher dose.

The tablet, licensed in June 2026, reported roughly 13.6% average weight loss over 64 weeks in the OASIS 4 trial, rising to about 17% among participants who adhered fully to the regimen. It needs to be taken first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, with only a small amount of plain water, waiting at least 30 minutes before food or other medicines. What semaglutide's brand name can and can't tell you

Wegovy (injection or tablet) is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to 29.9 alongside at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, raised cholesterol or obstructive sleep apnoea.
