Why is there no semaglutide injection bottle licensed in the UK?

Pharmaceutical manufacturers design drug delivery systems around the medicine's stability, dosing precision and patient safety. For Wegovy, Novo Nordisk chose a multi-dose, pre-filled pen because semaglutide is potent at very small volumes and because any measurement error with a vial-and-syringe system could result in the wrong dose being given. The pen removes that risk entirely: each click delivers a fixed, factory-set amount with no calculation on the patient's part.

A licensed semaglutide injection bottle simply does not exist as an approved UK product for weight management. The NHS patient information page for semaglutide describes Wegovy in pen form only, which reflects the product the MHRA has authorised. When vials or bottles of semaglutide appear on websites or social media feeds, they have not been through the UK licensing process in that format. The MHRA has warned publicly that fake and unlicensed weight-loss injectables are in circulation, some containing entirely different substances. Does the pen format change anything about how the dose schedule works?

No, the delivery device and the clinical schedule are separate things. Wegovy treatment begins at a low starter dose (0.25 mg weekly) and moves upward through several steps, each lasting around four weeks, guided by the prescriber. The pen you receive at each stage is simply the one calibrated for that dose. You do not adjust anything on the device itself.

Who can access Wegovy through a private prescription, and what does that involve?

Wegovy is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 and above where a weight-related health condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or type 2 diabetes is present.
