In January 2026 the MHRA approved a 7.2 mg semaglutide dose for Wegovy, initially delivered as three 2.4 mg pens taken weekly. Then on 14 April 2026 the MHRA approved a dedicated single-dose 7.2 mg pen, one injection per week, pre-set, with a built-in covered needle that locks after use. That approval was specifically for adults with a BMI of 30 or above; it does not extend to the lower-BMI cardiovascular indication.

Trial data reported around 20.7% average weight loss over 72 weeks at 7.2 mg, which narrows the gap considerably with tirzepatide's results at 15 mg. One thing worth stating plainly: not everyone will reach 7.2 mg. Whether any dose increase is appropriate depends on your response and tolerability. How the oral semaglutide strengths differ from the injection schedule

This is the UK's first oral GLP-1 medicine licensed for weight management, the MHRA granted approval on 11 June 2026, ahead of the rest of Europe.
