What the headline figure doesn't show is the spread. Some participants lost considerably more; others less. Framing the 15% as a guaranteed personal outcome would be misleading, the honest reading is that, for many people in a supervised clinical setting, the effect was meaningful and sustained.

A head-to-head comparison published in the NEJM in 2025 (the SURMOUNT-5 trial) found that tirzepatide (the dual GIP/GLP-1 agonist sold in the UK as Mounjaro) produced greater average weight reduction than semaglutide 2.4mg. UK licensing: what the "semi" injection is and is not approved for

Wegovy (semaglutide) holds a UK licence for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to 29.9 alongside at least one weight-related health condition such as high blood pressure, raised cholesterol, prediabetes or obstructive sleep apnoea. Lower BMI thresholds may apply for some ethnic backgrounds under UK clinical guidance.

Ozempic is the other semaglutide injection you will encounter online. It uses lower doses (up to 1mg or 2mg) and is licensed strictly for type 2 diabetes. NICE recommends Wegovy (TA875) for NHS use within specialist weight management services, with a maximum treatment duration of two years and a review if less than 5% weight is lost after six months at the maintenance dose. Side effects: what the evidence tells us, and when to seek help

The most commonly reported side effects are gastrointestinal: nausea, loose stools, constipation, indigestion, belching and fatigue. In the STEP 1 trial, around 74% of participants on semaglutide reported some GI symptom at some point, compared with roughly 48% on placebo. For most people these effects were mild to moderate and settled within days to a couple of weeks, particularly after dose increases.
