Wegovy injection sites: where to inject and what most people get wrong

Three licensed sites exist for Wegovy: abdomen, front of thigh, and outer upper arm, all deliver the medicine into subcutaneous fat.
Rotating your injection site within and between locations prevents skin changes such as lumps or hardened patches (lipohypertrophy) that slow absorption.
The abdomen is the most commonly chosen site for self-injection; the arm is usually easier when someone else is giving the injection.
Injecting into an area of active lipohypertrophy can reduce absorption unpredictably, a quick skin check before each dose takes under a minute.

When it comes to sites to inject Wegovy, the most common mistake is sticking to one spot every week. Semaglutide is a once-weekly subcutaneous injection, and choosing the right site — then rotating it — affects both comfort and how consistently your body absorbs the medicine. There are three licensed injection sites: the abdomen, the front of the thigh, and the upper arm. Each works, each has practical advantages depending on your situation, and knowing how to use them properly makes a real difference to your experience on treatment. Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine, so the decision to start (and guidance on technique) always begins with a clinical assessment.

How to choose, rotate, and check your injection sites safely

The myth: any spot in the general area is fine

A widely held belief is that as long as you're roughly in the right zone (somewhere on the stomach, somewhere on the leg) you're covered. In practice, precision within each zone matters more than most people realise. Repeatedly injecting into the same small patch of skin causes the fatty tissue underneath to thicken and harden. That hardened tissue, called lipohypertrophy, doesn't absorb semaglutide at the same rate as healthy subcutaneous fat. The result can be erratic absorption: some weeks the medicine gets in efficiently, other weeks less so, without any obvious reason.

The fix is straightforward. Within each zone, aim to move your injection point by at least two centimetres from the previous week's spot. If you use the abdomen, picture it divided into quadrants and work your way around them over successive weeks. NHS guidance on weight-management injections explains this rotation principle clearly, and it's worth reviewing alongside the Patient Information Leaflet that comes with your pen. A practical checking habit: before each injection, press lightly around your intended site. If it feels noticeably firmer or you can see a slight lump compared with surrounding skin, shift a couple of centimetres and try again. That takes under a minute and can meaningfully improve consistency.

Understanding the distinction between the three sites is the starting point for a good rotation plan, the full guide to Wegovy injection sites covers the anatomy of each zone and how to map your rotation across weeks.

The abdomen, thigh and arm: what each site actually offers

The abdomen is the most popular choice for self-injection and tends to give the most consistent absorption in clinical practice. Aim for the area between your navel and hip bones, staying at least five centimetres away from the navel itself. The skin there is usually easy to pinch, and most people find it the most accessible position when sitting or standing.

The front and outer thigh works well as a rotation partner with the abdomen. Sit down, relax the muscle, and inject into the middle third of the thigh. Tense muscle beneath the injection site is uncomfortable and can affect how the medicine disperses, so relaxing the leg first is worth doing every time. If you want to understand this site in more detail, the Wegovy thigh injection guide covers positioning and common technique errors specific to this site.

The outer upper arm is the site most people find easiest when a partner or carer is helping. Self-injecting into the arm is possible but awkward; a mirror and careful positioning help. Because the arm has less subcutaneous fat in many people, pinching the skin before injecting is especially important here. The arm injection guide goes into the specifics. Note that all three sites are also relevant if you're using other semaglutide-based medicines, the semaglutide injection sites page sets those in context.

Skin preparation, timing, and practical technique

Clean the injection site with an alcohol swab and allow it to dry fully before injecting, wet skin can sting, and residual alcohol can irritate the tissue. Let the pen reach room temperature before you inject; a cold pen straight from the fridge causes more discomfort than one that has been sitting out for twenty to thirty minutes. For the exact window during which Wegovy can remain out of refrigeration, the Wegovy storage guide covers that precisely, or check your Patient Information Leaflet, which always takes precedence.

Pinch the skin gently to lift subcutaneous fat away from the muscle underneath, insert the needle at a ninety-degree angle, and press the injection button firmly. Hold it in place for the count recommended in the leaflet before withdrawing. After injecting, don't rub the site; pressing gently with a clean finger for a few seconds is enough. Dispose of used needles immediately in an approved sharps container, never into household waste.

Common side effects of Wegovy are mostly gastrointestinal: nausea, loose stools, and indigestion are reported most often, especially in the early weeks or after a dose increase. Local reactions at the injection site (mild redness, brief stinging, or temporary tenderness) are generally short-lived. Serious injection-site reactions are uncommon, but persistent swelling, significant pain, or signs of infection need clinical review. The NHS semaglutide medicines page lists the full side-effect profile with guidance on which symptoms need prompt attention.

Thinking about whether Wegovy is right for your situation

Wegovy is licensed in the UK for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or from 27 with at least one weight-related health condition, used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Suitability goes beyond the BMI number: your prescriber considers your full medical history, any medicines you already take, and whether the injection route suits you. Some people (particularly those with a strong preference against injections) find the newer Wegovy tablet worth discussing at consultation instead.

If you're considering Wegovy as part of a broader look at treatment options, the weight-loss treatment overview lays out what's available privately in the UK and how the options compare. For context on what legitimate private treatment involves (including what the price of a private prescription actually covers) the guide to buying Wegovy online safely is worth reading before you proceed. A question our prescribers hear regularly is how Wegovy compares with other weight-loss injections; the Ozempic and weight-loss injections page addresses a common area of confusion around that. If you'd like to find out whether Wegovy is clinically appropriate for you, check your eligibility through a free consultation, reviewed the same day by a GPhC-registered prescriber, no algorithm involved.
