The products typically behind these claims are synthetic peptides (most commonly Melanotan II) sold online or via beauty salons. The MHRA has been clear on this: Melanotan products are not licensed in the UK, have not passed any regulatory assessment for safety or effectiveness, and have been linked to serious side effects including changes to moles and skin lesions, nausea, facial flushing, and cardiovascular effects. Buying them involves injecting an unverified substance of unknown concentration and purity.

These products are also frequently counterfeited. The same online market that sells unlicensed peptides is the same space the MHRA has targeted in enforcement operations, including the seizure of around 20 million doses of illegally traded weight-loss medicines worth roughly £45 million. The overlap matters: if a seller is offering unlicensed tanning injections, their weight-loss products deserve the same level of scrutiny. None of this means you can't access effective, licensed weight-loss treatment. It means the route to that treatment looks nothing like a DM from a tanning salon.

What a licensed weight-loss injection actually does to your body

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide) are the two injectable medicines currently licensed in the UK for weight management. Neither has anything to do with melanin or skin pigmentation.
