Tanning injections and weight loss: two very different things

Melanotan and similar peptides marketed as "tanning injections" are not licensed medicines in the UK — the MHRA has warned consumers against them repeatedly.
Licensed weight-loss injections (Mounjaro and Wegovy) work on gut-hormone receptors to reduce appetite; they have no tanning effect.
Any injection claiming to both tan and promote weight loss is not a regulated pharmaceutical product — it has not been assessed for safety or efficacy by the MHRA.
If you're considering a weight-loss injection, the only legal route is a prescription following a clinical assessment by a qualified prescriber.

If you've searched for "tanning injections weight loss" you may have come across products claiming to do both at once. To be direct: there is no licensed UK medicine that combines tanning and weight loss in a single injection. The two are separate, and the unlicensed substances sometimes marketed for both carry real risks. Licensed weight-loss injections available in the UK are prescription-only medicines assessed by a clinician before any prescription is written.

What licensed UK weight-loss injections actually do, and what to watch for

You've seen the claims online, here's what's actually being sold

Picture this: a social-media post promises a single weekly jab that gives you a sun-kissed glow and melts body fat at the same time. It looks professional, the before-and-afters are striking, and the price is surprisingly low. That combination of signals is worth pausing on.

The products typically behind these claims are synthetic peptides (most commonly Melanotan II) sold online or via beauty salons. The MHRA has been clear on this: Melanotan products are not licensed in the UK, have not passed any regulatory assessment for safety or effectiveness, and have been linked to serious side effects including changes to moles and skin lesions, nausea, facial flushing, and cardiovascular effects. Buying them involves injecting an unverified substance of unknown concentration and purity.

These products are also frequently counterfeited. The same online market that sells unlicensed peptides is the same space the MHRA has targeted in enforcement operations, including the seizure of around 20 million doses of illegally traded weight-loss medicines worth roughly £45 million. The overlap matters: if a seller is offering unlicensed tanning injections, their weight-loss products deserve the same level of scrutiny. The safety risks of unregulated weight-loss injections apply just as much here.

None of this means you can't access effective, licensed weight-loss treatment. It means the route to that treatment looks nothing like a DM from a tanning salon.

What a licensed weight-loss injection actually does to your body

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide) are the two injectable medicines currently licensed in the UK for weight management. Neither has anything to do with melanin or skin pigmentation. They work on gut-hormone receptors (GIP and GLP-1 in the case of tirzepatide, GLP-1 alone for semaglutide) which slow how quickly your stomach empties and reduce appetite signalling in the brain. The practical effect most people notice is eating less without feeling deprived, and feeling full much sooner.

The clinical evidence behind them is substantial. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial, participants using tirzepatide at the highest dose lost around 20–21% of their body weight on average over 72 weeks, published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Semaglutide at 2.4mg produced roughly 15% average weight loss in the STEP 1 trial over 68 weeks. These are real, peer-reviewed, regulatory-reviewed figures.

Neither medicine tans your skin. That's not a gap or a limitation, it's just what they are. If you're exploring how licensed weight-loss injections work, understanding what they genuinely do (and don't do) is the right starting point.

Why the search for shortcuts is completely understandable

Wanting results quickly, without injections you're not sure about, from a product that promises more than one thing, that's not naive, it's human. If you've been trying to manage your weight for a long time, you've probably already tried a lot of things. The appeal of something that claims to solve two problems at once makes sense.

But the gap between what unlicensed tanning-plus-weight-loss products promise and what they can safely deliver is wide. The MHRA's consistent position is that unlicensed injectable products sold for cosmetic or weight-loss purposes bypass every safety check that exists to protect you. No clinical trial. No pharmacovigilance. No supply-chain verification. You have no reliable way to know what's in the vial.

Licensed medicines are slower to access because they require a prescriber's assessment, but that step is also the one that catches contraindications, flags drug interactions, and makes sure the treatment is right for your specific health picture. You can read more about the clinically supervised approach to weight management to get a clearer sense of what a proper assessment involves.

The legal route to a licensed weight-loss injection in the UK

Both Mounjaro and Wegovy are prescription-only medicines. A prescriber (a doctor or a GPhC-registered Independent Prescriber) must assess your suitability before any prescription can be issued. Privately, that assessment can happen quickly: at nume, a real clinician (never automated software) reviews your consultation the same day.

Eligibility broadly follows the licensed criteria: adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above with at least one weight-related health condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or type 2 diabetes. The prescriber assesses the full picture; a BMI figure alone doesn't determine the outcome. Lower thresholds can apply for some ethnic backgrounds under UK clinical guidance.

Mounjaro starts at 2.5mg (a dose chosen to let your system adjust) and is titrated by your prescriber over time. The different injection options available are worth understanding before you make any decision, as the right choice depends on your health history and what a prescriber thinks suits you best. One contextual note on cost: if you're wondering what private treatment realistically involves financially, the reality of weight-loss injection pricing is worth reading before you compare options. If you've come across a weight loss injection beginning with R in your research, it's also worth understanding exactly what that medicine is and how it compares to the currently licensed options.
