It's a fair question to ask, and you're probably not alone in wondering. Obesity in pet dogs is a genuine welfare problem, the British Veterinary Association has noted that excess weight shortens pets' lives and worsens joint disease, breathing difficulties and diabetes risk. Given how much attention GLP-1 medicines have attracted for human weight loss, it's natural that owners would wonder whether the same approach could help their dog.
Tirzepatide works in humans by activating two gut-hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1, which together reduce appetite and slow how quickly the stomach empties. Dogs do have GLP-1 receptors, which is why the question isn't entirely without biological logic. But receptor presence alone tells us very little about whether a drug is safe or effective in a species it was never tested in. The dose, the formulation, how the drug is broken down, and how the kidneys handle it all differ significantly between humans and dogs. A pen designed for a 100kg human carries an amount of active medicine that could be acutely dangerous to an animal a fraction of that weight.
The NHS patient information for tirzepatide makes no mention of veterinary use because the medicine simply has no authorisation outside human adults, and the clinical trials that informed the UK licence enrolled humans only.
Pre-clinical research using GLP-1 receptor agonists did involve animals, including rodents and some larger mammals, but these studies were conducted in laboratory settings under strict ethical oversight, with purpose-designed doses and careful monitoring. They were not designed to treat pet animals, and the results are not a blueprint for home use.
Specifically for tirzepatide, the clinical programme that led to its UK approval (the SURMOUNT trials, involving thousands of adult participants) was conducted entirely in humans. The SURMOUNT-1 trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, showed an average body-weight reduction of around 20–21% at the 15mg dose over 72 weeks. That evidence base is robust for adult humans meeting the licensed criteria. It says nothing meaningful about safety or efficacy in a Labrador.
There is no peer-reviewed veterinary trial data on tirzepatide in dogs. There is no approved veterinary dose. There is no veterinary SmPC. Any suggestion that a human pen could simply be split or reduced for a dog lacks the clinical grounding that responsible prescribing requires, and a tirzepatide prescription from a UK pharmacy is issued only after a clinical assessment of a human patient.
Veterinary pharmacology does explore novel treatments, and it's possible that GLP-1-based approaches could one day be assessed for animal use under proper regulatory oversight. That research hasn't produced an approved product yet. For now, a vet can recommend calorie-controlled feeding plans, specific veterinary weight-management diets, and increased activity, much the same lifestyle framework that supports human weight-loss medicine.
If your vet suggests a prescription treatment for your dog's weight, that prescription will come through a licensed veterinary route, not a human pharmacy. Purchasing a human GLP-1 pen and administering it to an animal would mean giving a medicine that carries no veterinary safety data, in a dose based on guesswork, via a device calibrated for adult human subcutaneous tissue. The MHRA's Yellow Card scheme exists so that adverse events with medicines (in humans) can be reported; veterinary concerns go through the VMD's Suspected Adverse Reactions surveillance scheme.

Adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27 or above alongside a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes or obstructive sleep apnoea, may be eligible for tirzepatide under its UK licence.
