The excipients: what the other ingredients actually do

The active peptide accounts for only a small proportion of the volume in each injection. The rest is a carefully formulated solution designed to keep the molecule stable, make the pH suitable for subcutaneous tissue, and ensure consistent dosing.

The Mounjaro formulation contains sodium phosphate monobasic monohydrate and sodium phosphate dibasic heptahydrate, these are the buffering agents that maintain a stable pH throughout the pen's shelf life. Sodium chloride keeps the osmolarity of the solution close to that of body fluids, reducing discomfort at the injection site. Polysorbate 80 is a surfactant used at very low concentrations to prevent the peptide from aggregating (clumping together) inside the solution. Water for injections carries everything in suspension.
