Travelling with Mounjaro: How to Keep Your Pens Safe on the Road

What the official storage guidance actually means when you leave home

The Mounjaro SmPC, published on the electronic Medicines Compendium, states that pens must be stored in a refrigerator at 2–8°C until first use. After that, a pen may be stored below a defined temperature threshold for a fixed period, but that exact figure is printed on the SmPC and the PIL that arrives with your medication, not replicated here, because it can differ between presentations and regulatory updates. Read it before you pack. Ignoring that window risks degrading the active ingredient, tirzepatide, which could reduce effectiveness without producing any visible change in the liquid.

Hotels are generally straightforward: ask reception on arrival for guaranteed minibar or room-fridge access rather than assuming the minibar stays at a stable temperature. On cruise ships, ask the medical centre to store your pens. Camping or festival trips need more planning, a 12V car-fridge or insulin-rated cooler is worth the investment if you are spending several days away from mains power.

Getting through airport security and customs with a GLP-1 pen

At UK airports, Mounjaro pens fall under the medical liquids exemption and are permitted through security in quantities exceeding 100ml, the standard liquid rule does not apply to prescription medicines. You should carry your prescription, or a signed letter from your pharmacy or prescriber confirming the medicine, your name and the dose. This is not a legal requirement at every checkpoint, but it removes ambiguity and speeds up screening. Keep pens in your hand luggage, not checked bags: aircraft hold temperatures can drop well below freezing, which damages the medicine. A question our prescribers hear most weeks is whether Mounjaro needs a special travel certificate. For most European destinations and short-haul trips, a dispensing label showing your name, the medicine and the prescriber is sufficient. For longer or more complex itineraries (particularly countries with strict controlled-medicines rules) you may need a translated letter or a formal medicines passport. Injecting away from home: technique, hygiene and disposal

The injection technique for Mounjaro does not change when you travel. Mounjaro is a once-weekly subcutaneous injection given into the abdomen, thigh or upper arm; sites should be rotated. What does change is the practicalities: you may be in a hotel bathroom rather than your kitchen, and you will need to dispose of used needles safely.

Standard sharps bins are not available in most hotel rooms. Never place used needles in a tissue or wrap them in a towel; this is a needlestick risk for housekeeping staff. Planning your dose schedule around time zones and missed-dose risk

Mounjaro is taken once weekly, which gives useful flexibility. If you are crossing time zones, the key rule is straightforward: you can take it a day early or up to a day late without restarting the schedule, provided your prescriber agrees. Pack at least one spare pen when trip length allows. Supply disruptions abroad are unpredictable, and finding Mounjaro through a legitimate licensed pharmacy in another country is not guaranteed.
