Start journey Learn moreThere is no licensed over-the-counter alternative to Wegovy for weight loss in the UK. Semaglutide and every other GLP-1 medicine are Prescription-Only Medicines, meaning a prescriber must assess you before any treatment is dispensed — and that applies to orlistat at its higher prescription strength too. If you have heard otherwise, that is one of the most common misconceptions floating around weight-loss forums, and it is worth clearing up quickly. The only legal route to Wegovy or any comparable treatment is a clinical consultation, either through your GP or a regulated online service. The full picture on buying Wegovy without a prescription explains this in detail, but this page covers the broader landscape: what the realistic alternatives are, what is actually available to buy without a prescription, and what that genuinely means for your options.

One product is: orlistat 60mg, sold under the brand name Alli in pharmacies. It works by blocking roughly a third of the fat you eat from being absorbed, and it is available to adults with a BMI of 28 or above, purchased directly from a pharmacist after a brief check. Results are modest compared to GLP-1 medicines, and the side effects, mainly loose oily stools if fat intake stays high, require dietary adjustment to manage. It is a genuine option for some people, but it occupies a different tier of effectiveness to semaglutide or tirzepatide.
Beyond Alli, the landscape is bare. Every other medicine with meaningful clinical evidence for weight loss in the UK (semaglutide (Wegovy), tirzepatide (Mounjaro), and the newly approved oral semaglutide (Wegovy tablets)) is prescription-only. That is not a technicality that online sellers can work around. It is a legal requirement under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012, and the NHS medicines page for semaglutide is clear that a prescription is required. If you have ever wondered whether Wegovy can be bought over the counter, the short answer is that there is no pharmacy, clinic or website operating legally in the UK that can supply it or its closest alternatives without one.
Supplements marketed as "natural GLP-1 alternatives" exist, but none hold MHRA authorisation as medicines and none have the clinical trial evidence that Wegovy carries. They are regulated as food supplements, not treatments.
The most significant is tirzepatide (Mounjaro). Where semaglutide activates one gut-hormone receptor, tirzepatide activates two (both GLP-1 and GIP) which is why the trial data consistently shows greater average weight loss. In the SURMOUNT-5 head-to-head trial, tirzepatide produced greater average weight reduction than semaglutide 2.4mg over 72 weeks, as reported in the New England Journal of Medicine (2025). NICE has recommended tirzepatide (TA1026) for adults with a BMI of 35 or above alongside at least one weight-related condition. Both medicines require prescriptions; both are dispensed as weekly injections.
A third option arrived in June 2026: the Wegovy tablet, the first oral GLP-1 medicine licensed for weight management in the UK. The MHRA approved it on 11 June 2026 for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to 29.9 with a weight-related condition. Trial data from OASIS 4 (64 weeks) showed an average weight loss of around 13.6%, rising to approximately 17% among those who adhered fully. It involves a once-daily tablet taken first thing in the morning, before food or drink, which many people find easier than an injection. More on how semaglutide works in both forms sets out the mechanism clearly.
For people exploring what else might suit them, the alternatives to semaglutide page runs through the options in depth, including how the clinical profiles compare.
Usually one of three reasons: cost, speed, or the belief that a prescription is an unnecessary hurdle. On cost, private prescription services vary considerably, and the price of Mounjaro in particular shifted after Eli Lilly raised its UK list price in September 2025. On speed, the wait for NHS treatment through a specialist weight management service can be long. On the prescription-as-hurdle point, this is where the misconception matters most: the clinical assessment is not a formality. GLP-1 medicines interact with contraception, affect surgical anaesthesia planning, carry a specific risk of acute pancreatitis, and are not recommended during pregnancy or for anyone trying to conceive. A prescriber reviewing those factors is protecting you, not gatekeeping.
If cost is the concern, comparing Wegovy and its alternatives side by side gives a clearer picture of what different treatments involve and what you are actually paying for. If speed is the issue, a regulated online pharmacy service with same-day clinical review is meaningfully faster than an NHS referral pathway. The MHRA has warned repeatedly about fake pens sold via social media by sellers offering GLP-1 medicines without clinical assessment, the supply chain matters as much as the price.
At a regulated service, the process runs: free online consultation, clinical review by a GPhC-registered Independent Prescriber (a named clinician, not an automated system) identity and weight verification, and then dispensing from a GPhC-registered pharmacy once approved. You can check any online pharmacy on the GPhC pharmacy register before placing an order. nume's registration number is 9012878.
Treatment options covered in a consultation include Wegovy injection, Wegovy tablets, and Mounjaro, depending on your circumstances and clinical suitability. How to access Wegovy through a private prescription covers the steps in full. If you want to explore what is right for your situation, speak to our prescribers, the consultation is free, and there is no obligation.
