Start journey Learn moreEggs are one of the most practical protein sources you can eat while taking Wegovy (semaglutide). They are easy to digest in small portions, versatile, and rich in nutrients that matter during weight loss treatment. That said, some people find certain foods trigger nausea on semaglutide, so it is worth knowing how eggs tend to fit in. These are prescription-only medicines assessed and prescribed by a qualified clinician, not available over the counter.

Semaglutide works partly by slowing gastric emptying and reducing appetite signals, which means most people eat significantly less food each day. Eating less is the point. But eat too little protein over weeks and months, and the weight you lose will come partly from muscle tissue rather than fat alone. That changes your body composition in ways that are harder to reverse.
Eggs are useful here because a single medium egg delivers around six grams of complete protein, all nine essential amino acids, plus vitamin B12, choline, selenium and fat-soluble vitamins. For someone eating smaller volumes than usual, foods that pack a lot of nutrition into a few bites earn their place. The NHS patient information for semaglutide does not restrict eggs specifically, and no clinical guidance singles them out as a food to avoid on this treatment.
Two or three eggs at breakfast can anchor your protein intake for the morning without a large volume of food, which suits the reduced appetite most people experience on Wegovy, a licensed injectable treatment containing semaglutide. If you find you can only manage a small meal, an egg-based dish often delivers more nutritional return per forkful than toast alone.
Nausea is the most commonly reported side effect of semaglutide, particularly in the weeks after starting or after a dose increase. Gastric emptying slows, so food stays in the stomach longer. Rich, fatty or very large meals amplify that feeling; eggs, eaten simply, tend not to.
There is a subset of people who develop a temporary aversion to eggs specifically while on semaglutide, often described as a smell sensitivity or a sudden dislike of a food they previously enjoyed. This is not unique to eggs; the same pattern can happen with coffee, meat or strong-smelling foods. It tends to ease as the body adjusts to the new dose. If eggs become unpleasant to eat, swap to another protein source for a few weeks and try again. Tinned fish, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese or tofu are reasonable alternatives that are equally easy to prepare in small portions.
Cooking method matters more than many people expect. A fried egg cooked in a pool of butter lands very differently in a slowed stomach compared with two eggs scrambled gently with a splash of milk. Keeping early meals lower in added fat reduces the risk of nausea without cutting protein. You might find it useful to look at how nutrition choices intersect with other aspects of semaglutide treatment, since protein and hydration affect more than just weight loss.
The relationship between dietary cholesterol from eggs and blood cholesterol levels has been revised substantially in recent years. Current UK dietary guidance does not set an upper limit on egg consumption for the general population, and major bodies including the British Heart Foundation note that eggs eaten as part of a balanced diet are not strongly linked to cardiovascular risk for most people.
If you have a specific lipid condition, your prescriber or GP is best placed to give personal advice. On Wegovy, many patients see improvements in cholesterol and blood pressure as weight reduces, so the overall metabolic picture often improves, and patients also using HRT alongside Wegovy may find their hormonal health interacts with these metabolic changes in ways worth discussing with their prescriber. Our clinical team at nume reviews each patient's health profile individually, which is exactly why a clinical assessment sits at the start of any treatment.
One practical note: an egg kept hard-boiled in the fridge door is one of the easiest high-protein snacks to reach for when your appetite has narrowed and cooking feels like effort. Small, ready-to-eat, no preparation required. It sounds minor, but on days when nausea has flattened your appetite, having protein within reach matters.
Semaglutide does not come with a prescribed diet plan, but clinical guidance consistently emphasises a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity alongside treatment. The NHS England guidance on weight management injections makes clear that lifestyle changes remain central to outcomes. Eggs slot well into several practical approaches: high-protein breakfasts, lower-carbohydrate meals, or simply nutrient-dense eating when food volume is low.
Keep variety in your diet where possible. Relying on any single food too heavily narrows your micronutrient intake. Some people on semaglutide find that vitamin B12 deserves particular attention during treatment; eggs contribute a small amount, though they are rarely sufficient as a sole source if there is a deficiency concern.
If you want to understand semaglutide more broadly, including how Wegovy is being explored in the context of conditions such as multiple sclerosis, the semaglutide overview covers the mechanism, evidence and eligibility in detail. Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine; a GPhC-registered prescriber reviews every patient individually before any treatment begins. If you are thinking about whether Wegovy could be right for you, the right starting point is a clinical consultation. You can check your eligibility with our prescribers at no charge.
