Wegovy as a pill: what the oral tablet means for you

You've heard about the injection, so what's actually different about the pill?

Picture the moment you decided to look into weight-loss treatment. Maybe needles put you off. Maybe you travel often and the thought of keeping a pen refrigerated at 2–8°C felt like too much. Maybe you simply prefer tablets.

The Wegovy pill contains semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist, the same hormone pathway the injection activates. What changes is the delivery. To reach the bloodstream through the gut wall, the tablet pairs semaglutide with an absorption enhancer called SNAC. This co-formulation is what makes oral GLP-1 treatment possible at all; without it, the medicine would be broken down in the stomach before it could work.

Because absorption depends on an empty stomach, timing matters more than it does with an injection. The tablet is taken first thing in the morning with a small sip of plain water (no more than around 120ml) and you wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else (including coffee), or taking other oral medicines. For many people, building that into a morning routine becomes second nature fairly quickly: tablet, then kettle, then breakfast.

What the trial evidence actually showed

The phase 3 evidence for the Wegovy tablet comes from the OASIS 4 trial: 307 adults with obesity or overweight plus at least one weight-related condition, without diabetes, followed for 64 weeks alongside lifestyle support. Published figures from the MHRA approval announcement in June 2026 showed an average weight loss of around 13.6% on semaglutide versus approximately 2.4% on placebo.

Among participants who adhered fully to the treatment throughout the trial, average weight loss reached roughly 16.6%, just under 17%. It is important to hold that figure in context: it describes a fully-adherent subgroup, not the overall average. The headline number to use when thinking about realistic outcomes is the 13.6% average across everyone in the trial.

The most commonly reported side effects were gastrointestinal: nausea, loose stools, vomiting and indigestion, experienced by the majority of participants on the tablet, more frequently than in the placebo group. These effects were generally mild to moderate in severity and most settled over time, particularly after the body adjusted to each dose step. The escalating dose schedule and what 'escalating' actually means in practice

The Wegovy tablet does not start at 25mg. Treatment begins at 1.5mg, a low starting point designed to let the body adjust before the dose rises. From there it moves through 4mg and 9mg before reaching the 25mg maintenance dose, with at least one month at each level before moving up. Your prescriber determines the pace based on how you are tolerating the medicine; nobody simply advances on a fixed clock regardless of how they feel.

People already established on the 2.4mg weekly injection may be able to move directly to the 25mg maintenance tablet, subject to clinical assessment, this is not an assumption to act on alone.

One point that surprises some people: the Rybelsus tablet, also oral semaglutide, is licensed for type 2 diabetes at doses of 3mg, 7mg and 14mg. Those are entirely separate strengths for a different indication. NHS availability and the private route

At the time of writing, the Wegovy tablet is not available on the NHS. A NICE technology appraisal would be needed before NHS commissioning could begin, and that process takes time. For now, access is through a private prescription following clinical assessment.
