Start journey Learn moreCalorie calculators can help you understand roughly how much energy your body needs while taking Wegovy, but they work differently once semaglutide starts reducing your appetite. On Wegovy, most people find their hunger falls noticeably within the first few weeks, so the number a standard calculator gives you may need rethinking. Wegovy (semaglutide) is a prescription-only medicine, and how you adjust your calorie intake on it should be guided by your prescriber rather than a generic online tool. That said, understanding what the numbers mean, and how to use them sensibly alongside treatment, is genuinely useful.

A TDEE calculator takes your height, weight, age and a rough activity level and returns a number, typically somewhere between 1,600 and 2,800 kcal for most adults. That number tells you what your body burns at its current size doing what you currently do. It is a useful reference point. On Wegovy, however, the medicine itself tends to lower the amount you want to eat (often well below that ceiling) without you having to fight hunger to get there.
So rather than aiming to hit your TDEE estimate, the practical step is to treat it as context: you now know roughly where your energy balance sits, and eating meaningfully below it (around 500 kcal/day below is a commonly cited deficit for steady loss) will produce a calorie deficit. The NHS guidance on healthy weight provides a grounded reference for what a sustainable deficit looks like in practice, and it is worth bookmarking rather than relying on calculator outputs alone.
One quick habit worth building: after you have run the calculator, spend thirty seconds looking at whether your daily protein target is visible in the output. Many calculators show only total calories. If protein is not shown separately, make a note of it yourself, roughly 1.2 to 1.6 g per kilogram of your target body weight is a sensible range to discuss with your prescriber. That thirty-second check tells you more about the quality of your intake than the calorie number alone.
Wegovy is titrated over several months, starting at 0.25 mg and working up toward the maintenance dose, with each step held for roughly four weeks. As the dose increases, the appetite-suppressing effect typically deepens. This means the calorie level that felt right at a lower dose may feel like too much once you reach a higher one.
This is not a problem to solve by forcing yourself to eat less; it is the medicine working as intended. The clinical concern runs the other way: some people on higher doses eat so little that protein, fibre and micronutrient intake falls below what the body needs to preserve muscle and support general health. Thinking carefully about what to prioritise in your diet on Wegovy becomes more important than counting every calorie at this stage.
Your actual calorie need also changes as you lose weight, because a lighter body burns slightly less at rest. Running the calculator again every six to eight weeks gives you a refreshed estimate and is a simple way to keep your reference figures honest. Understanding how calories work specifically in the context of Wegovy can help you interpret those refreshed figures more accurately. The NICE appraisal of semaglutide for weight management (NICE TA875) recommends treatment is accompanied by reduced-calorie dietary support, which underlines that the numbers and the clinical plan belong together.
Calorie calculators are good at estimating energy. They cannot measure protein distribution across meals, fibre intake, hydration, meal timing, or how well you are tolerating food at your current dose. These factors shape whether the weight you lose comes primarily from fat or from lean tissue, and they affect energy levels and side-effect experience considerably.
On Wegovy, gastrointestinal side effects including nausea, constipation and slower digestion are common, particularly in the weeks after a dose step-up. Adjusting your calorie intake during dose transitions is often more about food texture and meal size than the total number. Smaller, more frequent meals tend to be better tolerated than three large ones. These are the kinds of adjustments a prescriber or dietitian can help you make based on how you are actually getting on.
There is also a question of how many calories per day actually makes sense for your specific situation, which depends on your starting BMI, any weight-related conditions, and your activity level. Getting a clearer picture of the right daily calorie range for you on Wegovy is a more targeted question than any generic calculator can answer. Our clinical team profiles, including our clinical lead, set out the oversight behind the advice you receive at consultation.
A calorie figure from an online tool becomes much more useful when a prescriber can look at it alongside your actual health picture. If you have done the calculation and have questions about whether the number seems right given how you are eating and how the medicine is affecting your appetite, that is exactly the kind of thing to raise at your next clinical review.
At nume, every repeat order is clinically re-reviewed before it is dispensed, which means there are regular, structured opportunities to talk through how treatment is going, including dietary questions. You do not need to work out the right calorie target on your own. If you are also curious about the protein side of the equation alongside Wegovy, that is a closely related calculation worth doing at the same time. And if cost is a factor in your thinking, a factual overview of how Wegovy pricing works in the UK can help you plan ahead. When you are ready, speaking to our prescribers is a straightforward next step, with consultations reviewed the same day by a GPhC-registered Independent Prescriber.
