What Is a Wegovy Demonstration Pen and How Does It Work?

The demonstration pen contains no medicine — it is a practice-only training device with the same shape, click mechanism and needle cover as the real Wegovy pen.
Practising with it before your first injection helps you confirm the right grip, injection angle, and how firmly to hold the pen against the skin until the click confirms delivery.
Wegovy is a once-weekly subcutaneous (under-the-skin) injection; approved sites are the abdomen, thigh or upper arm, rotated each week.
The real pen is prescription-only and dispensed as part of a clinically supervised programme; the demonstration pen is an educational aid, not a replacement for reading the Patient Information Leaflet.

A Wegovy demonstration pen is an inactive training device, identical in shape and feel to the real semaglutide injection pen, but containing no medicine. Novo Nordisk provides it so that patients can practise the injection steps before using their first live dose. Getting hands-on with the pen before injection day is genuinely reassuring — many people find the physical rehearsal is what converts a vague worry into calm confidence. Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine for weight management in adults; a prescriber decides whether it's clinically suitable before any treatment begins, as the NHS's guidance on semaglutide makes clear.

Using the Wegovy demo pen to prepare for your first injection, step by step

What exactly does the Wegovy demonstration pen contain?

Nothing that acts on your body. The demo pen is an inert plastic device made to replicate the look, weight and click of a real Wegovy pre-filled injection pen. When you press it against your skin and push the button, the mechanism fires in the same way (you hear the click, feel the slight resistance, and learn to hold steady until the second indicator appears) but no needle penetrates and no substance is delivered.

Novo Nordisk distributes these training aids through healthcare providers specifically so patients are not learning the injection steps for the first time on a live dose. First attempts can feel uncertain; practising on your own arm or abdomen, without any consequence if you rush or angle awkwardly, takes a lot of that uncertainty away. Think of it as a rehearsal before the real thing. If your clinic or pharmacy provides one, use it at least once on your planned injection site before your first real dose day.

One quick check worth building into your habit: before every real injection, glance at the dose window on the pen to confirm the number matches your prescribed strength. It takes about five seconds and sidesteps a common source of anxiety. If you are starting out and need a single starter pen, you can find out more on our Wegovy 1 pen page, and you can find more detail about the full range of pen formats on our Wegovy pen overview page.

How does the demonstration pen mirror the real Wegovy injection technique?

The Wegovy injection pen is a pre-filled, disposable device. You attach a fresh needle, clean the skin with an alcohol swab, insert at roughly a 90-degree angle (or 45 degrees if you have very little subcutaneous tissue on the chosen site), press the button firmly, and hold in place until both audible and visual signals confirm the dose has been delivered. The cap and needle shield are then replaced and the pen disposed of safely.

The demonstration pen reproduces each of those physical steps: capping and uncapping, attaching a practice needle, pressing the injection button, and waiting for the click. It also reinforces the important habit of not removing the pen too quickly, one of the most common reasons people wonder whether the dose actually went in. Full technique guidance lives in the Wegovy injection instructions page, and the official Patient Information Leaflet that comes in your prescription box is the definitive reference for every detail.

If you plan to change your needle between injections, compatible replacement needles are available, our needles (100-pack) are designed for use with Wegovy pens and can be useful to have to hand.

Does everyone receive a demonstration pen, and where can you get one?

Not automatically. Whether a demo pen is included depends on how your Wegovy is prescribed and dispensed. Patients starting through certain NHS specialist weight management services may receive one as part of their onboarding; patients using a private online pharmacy may or may not, depending on the service. If one was not included with your prescription, ask your prescriber or pharmacist directly, they can usually request one from Novo Nordisk or point you to an alternative resource.

Novo Nordisk also hosts instructional videos on its UK patient site that walk through the injection steps frame by frame. These, combined with the Patient Information Leaflet and a conversation with your prescriber, cover the same ground as the physical demo pen for most people. The NHS England guidance on weight-management injections notes that patients should be properly supported with injection technique before starting, if you feel you haven't had that, it is entirely reasonable to ask your provider for help before your first dose.

Storage of your real pens is a separate but related concern: the pen must be kept refrigerated until use, and there is a limited window for room-temperature storage covered in detail on our Wegovy refrigeration page. If you're travelling when a dose falls due, our guide to travelling with Wegovy covers what to plan for.

What should you do if you're still unsure about injecting after practising?

Tell someone, your prescriber, a pharmacist, or a clinical support team. Hesitation about self-injection is common and completely understandable. It does not mean Wegovy is wrong for you; it means you need a bit more support before starting, which is a normal part of treatment preparation. Skipping a dose because of technique anxiety is not a solution, and the timing of doses matters clinically.

Some people find it helps to watch the Wegovy injection demonstration video alongside using the demo pen, rather than relying on one or the other. Others prefer a phone or video call with a clinician who can talk them through it in real time. At nume, our prescribers are available for exactly this kind of aftercare question, you are not expected to figure it out alone. If you are still weighing up whether a weekly injection is right for you compared to other options, our weight-loss treatment overview sets out what's licensed and how the approaches differ, and our guide to weight loss injections including Ozempic explains how semaglutide-based treatments compare.

When you are ready to take the next step, speaking to our prescribers is the place to start, the consultation is free, and every application is read by a GPhC-registered Independent Prescriber, not automated software.
