The Wegovy device: what the pen looks like, how it works, and what's changed

The biggest misconception: you don't mix, dial or attach anything

Most people who ask about the Wegovy device have encountered a lot of online noise suggesting it's complicated to use. It isn't. Each pen comes pre-filled and pre-set. There is no mixing of powder and liquid, no needle to screw on, and no dose window to twist to the right number. You uncap it, place the pen flat against clean skin at one of the three injection sites (abdomen, outer thigh, or upper arm), and press the button. An audible click confirms the injection is complete. The device then locks automatically, making accidental re-use impossible.

This matters because it means the technique your prescriber or nurse walks you through is genuinely straightforward. Most people who describe themselves as nervous about injections find the reality much less daunting than the idea. That said, the patient information leaflet included with each pen contains illustrated step-by-step instructions and should be read before the first dose.

The pen formats available in the UK, including the new 7.2mg device

For most of Wegovy's time on the UK market, each pen was set to one of the dose levels in the titration schedule: 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1.0mg, 1.7mg, and 2.4mg. You move through those doses over roughly five months, following your prescriber's instructions, before reaching the 2.4mg maintenance dose.

In January 2026, the MHRA approved a 7.2mg dose level (initially supplied as three 2.4mg pens per week). Then, on 14 April 2026, they approved a dedicated single-dose 7.2mg pen, one injection per week, auto-dosing, with a built-in covered needle that locks after use. The regulator's announcement confirmed approval for adults with a BMI of 30 or above; the 7.2mg pen is not authorised for those using Wegovy for its cardiovascular indication. Even with this higher dose available, the starting point remains 0.25mg and titration still proceeds under prescriber guidance.

Storage, routine, and keeping the pen in good condition

The pen must be kept in the fridge at 2–8°C, many people keep theirs in the fridge door, which is convenient and keeps it within sight on injection day. Room-temperature storage is possible for a limited period (for example, when travelling), but the exact duration differs by pen format. Always check the current patient information leaflet rather than relying on a figure quoted online, because the approved storage windows can change between device versions.

Never freeze the pen, and never use it if it has been frozen. Keep it away from direct heat and light. The pen should be brought to room temperature before use if it has been stored in the fridge, the leaflet specifies how long. The Wegovy 7.2mg pen and what it means for results

The 7.2mg pen represents a meaningful development. Clinical data associated with the approval reported around 20.7% average weight loss over 72 weeks at the 7.2mg dose, a result that closes much of the gap that previously existed between Wegovy at its earlier doses and the trial results for tirzepatide at higher doses.
