Novo Nordisk was established in Denmark a century ago and built its early reputation on insulin. Semaglutide came out of decades of GLP-1 research: the company first brought it to market as Ozempic for type 2 diabetes, then developed the higher 2.4mg weekly dose that became Wegovy for weight management. The UK marketing authorisation for Wegovy is held by Novo Nordisk A/S, and every pen sold legally in the UK must pass through Novo Nordisk's authorised supply chain. Novo Nordisk supplies Wegovy under the brand name in the UK (and as Ozempic for diabetes, a distinction worth keeping clear, because Ozempic is not licensed here for weight loss). The company also manufactures Rybelsus, an oral semaglutide tablet licensed for type 2 diabetes; its strengths of 3mg, 7mg and 14mg are entirely separate from the Wegovy weight-management injection.

What the MHRA's role means for the Wegovy you receive

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency licenses medicines in the UK. Novo Nordisk submitted the clinical trial data (including the STEP 1 trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, which showed around 15% average weight reduction over 68 weeks at the 2.4mg maintenance dose) and the MHRA assessed it before granting the authorisation. That process covers manufacturing standards, labelling, storage requirements and post-market safety obligations. The Black Triangle designation means Novo Nordisk must continue reporting safety data to the regulator on an ongoing basis, which is why the product information is periodically updated. When the MHRA approved the 7.2mg single-dose pen in April 2026, it did so following Novo Nordisk's submission of additional trial evidence showing approximately 20.7% average weight loss over 72 weeks at that dose. The regulator, not the manufacturer, decides whether the evidence justifies approval. It is also the MHRA that issues warnings when things go wrong: their guidance on GLP-1 medicines for weight loss (published on GOV.UK) spells out the risks of obtaining these medicines from sellers who supply them without a prescription, including counterfeit pens that have caused hospitalisations. The safest check: any pharmacy dispensing Wegovy in the UK must be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council; you can verify any pharmacy at the GPhC online register.

The decision patients actually face: does the manufacturer affect where you get treatment?

Novo Nordisk does not sell Wegovy directly to patients. The company sells to authorised wholesalers and pharmacies. What this means practically is that your decision is not really about which company makes Wegovy, it is about which clinical pathway gives you access to genuine, pharmacy-dispensed Wegovy with proper prescribing oversight. There are two broad routes in the UK. The NHS route operates under NICE guidance (TA875) through specialist weight management services, with strict eligibility thresholds and, in many areas, significant waiting times. The private route (a regulated online pharmacy like ours) does not require a referral or a waiting list, but does require a clinical consultation and a prescription from a qualified prescriber before any medicine is dispensed. Semaglutide, Wegovy and the wider Novo Nordisk pipeline

It is worth knowing that semaglutide itself (the molecule Novo Nordisk developed) now holds several separate UK licences for different indications.
