The Extra Dose in a Wegovy Pen: What the Evidence Actually Shows

The overfill exists to ensure that each of the four labelled doses is delivered in full; it compensates for dead space in the needle and the priming step the device performs. Why social media keeps finding 'extra doses', and why that matters

The question of a Wegovy extra dose circulates widely online, partly because some people have experimented with self-administration techniques to access residual medicine. The appeal is understandable: at current UK private prices, every dose feels significant. But the risks are real. A pre-filled auto-injector is not a vial. You cannot accurately measure residual volume, the needle may have been contaminated on previous uses, and the pen's lock-out mechanism exists precisely to prevent further activation.

What to do if your pen seems to have medicine left after the fourth injection

Contact your prescriber. That is the straightforward answer. If you believe your pen has not delivered a full dose (because of a technique issue, a priming problem or a device fault) that is a clinical conversation, not something to solve by attempting a fifth injection.
