Is Wegovy licensed for under 18s in the UK?

The decision is made by the licence, not by the prescriber

When a parent asks whether their teenager could be prescribed Wegovy, the answer isn't a clinical judgement call, it is a regulatory one. The UK marketing authorisation for semaglutide (Wegovy injection and, following its MHRA approval on 11 June 2026, the Wegovy oral tablet) specifies adults. That boundary sits in the product's licensed indications, and no GPhC-registered prescriber operating within the law can work around it. The NHS semaglutide page reflects this clearly: semaglutide for weight management is for adults only.

This matters for safety as well as law. The titration schedules, trial populations, and safety monitoring for Wegovy were all built around adults. A question our prescribers hear most weeks, particularly from parents of teenagers with significant weight-related health concerns, is whether there is any flexibility on this. There isn't, and a service that suggested otherwise would be operating outside the regulated framework.

If you have been offered Wegovy for a young person under 18 through any route, that is worth raising directly with the MHRA via the Yellow Card scheme, which covers both suspected side effects and concerns about inappropriate prescribing.

What research exists for younger people, and why it doesn't change the picture

Trials of GLP-1 medicines in adolescents have been conducted, and some results are promising. A phase 3 trial of semaglutide 2.4mg in adolescents aged 12 to 17 with obesity (published in the New England Journal of Medicine) showed meaningful reductions in BMI compared with placebo, alongside lifestyle support. That data is real and worth knowing about. But trial evidence and UK regulatory approval are different things. As of summer 2026, no GLP-1 weight-management medicine holds a UK licence for under-18s, and NICE has not appraised any for this age group.

The distinction matters practically: even if a clinician privately believes the evidence is compelling, they cannot legally prescribe an unlicensed medicine to a minor through a standard online or community pharmacy consultation. Off-label prescribing in paediatrics is possible in specialist settings under specific governance frameworks, but that is a long way from an online pharmacy consultation. The right pathway for a young person with weight-related health problems

The appropriate starting point is a GP. In England, referral to a specialist paediatric weight management service (often a tier 3 or tier 4 service depending on complexity) is the route through which a young person would access structured support, including dietetic, psychological and medical input. NHS England's medicines for obesity overview sets out how these pathways are organised, though paediatric provision varies considerably by region.

It is also worth being aware that semaglutide's licensing status for under-18s sits in a broader regulatory landscape for GLP-1 medicines in younger people, where evidence is accumulating but approvals have not yet followed. That may change; it hasn't yet. For any family navigating this, the honest message is that a specialist paediatric clinician is the right person to assess options, map the evidence and make a referral if a medical treatment eventually becomes appropriate.
