A Generic Version of Wegovy: What Actually Exists in the UK

Step 1: Understand what a generic medicine actually is, and why Wegovy doesn't have one yet

A generic medicine contains the same active ingredient at the same dose as the original branded product, and it reaches the market only after the original manufacturer's patent expires. For most common medicines, that window is around 20 years from the patent filing date. Until that protection expires, no manufacturer can legally produce and market a generic semaglutide product for weight management here.

This trips up a lot of people, and it's easy to see why. You might have heard that semaglutide is available more cheaply elsewhere, or seen social-media posts about "generic Ozempic" from overseas pharmacies. Those products are not licensed by the MHRA for UK use. Importing them is a legal grey area at best, and the clinical risks (unknown manufacturing standards, incorrect concentrations, contamination) are not theoretical. The MHRA has seized large quantities of fake and unlicensed weight-loss pens through 2024 and 2025, including the first illicit UK site producing counterfeit tirzepatide pens. So when someone searches for a generic version of Wegovy, the honest answer is: it doesn't exist yet in any form the UK regulator has approved. What does exist are the two licensed Wegovy products, and a separate licensed medicine (tirzepatide, sold as Mounjaro) which works differently but is also approved for weight management. Knowing the distinction matters before you make any decision.

Step 2: Know what semaglutide products are actually licensed in the UK for weight loss

Semaglutide for weight management comes in two MHRA-licensed forms. The first is the Wegovy weekly injection, a once-weekly subcutaneous pen starting at 0.25mg and titrated by your prescriber up to a 2.4mg maintenance dose, with a recently approved 7.2mg option for eligible adults. The second, newer form is the Wegovy tablet. On 11 June 2026 the MHRA approved oral semaglutide for weight management, making the UK the first country in Europe to license it. It's taken once daily, starting at 1.5mg and escalating to a 25mg maintenance dose. It requires no refrigeration, which makes it more practical for people who travel frequently or prefer not to self-inject. Both forms require a prescription. Neither is available on a self-select basis. The prescriber's assessment is the first step, not a formality, it is legally required and clinically necessary.

Step 3: Understand where Ozempic and Rybelsus fit (and why they are not the answer here)

Two other semaglutide products exist in the UK: Ozempic (injection) and Rybelsus (tablet). Both are licensed for type 2 diabetes management, not for weight loss. Prescribing either off-label for weight management is outside their authorised indications, and the NHS semaglutide information is clear on the distinction between the diabetes and weight-management licences.

It is worth understanding this because some people arrive at a consultation having already looked into Rybelsus as a "cheaper oral semaglutide". The tablet strengths are different (3mg, 7mg and 14mg) and it is not interchangeable with the Wegovy tablet schedule. Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) is a separate molecule altogether (a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist made by Eli Lilly) and has its own MHRA licence for weight management. It is not a generic of anything; it is a different medicine. Step 4: Check where private treatment fits if you don't qualify for NHS access

On the NHS, Wegovy is available through specialist weight management services under NICE guidance TA875, but waiting lists are commonly long and the eligibility criteria are specific. Tirzepatide became available through some GP practices from April 2026 under new NHS contract arrangements, though participation varies by practice. The NHS route suits many people, but it does not suit everyone, particularly those who don't meet the current phased criteria or who want to begin treatment sooner.
