Getting Wegovy in London: myths, facts and the regulated route

The biggest myth: London has its own Wegovy supply or faster access

Search for Wegovy in London and you'll find a mix of private clinics, wellness centres and online pharmacies, some of which position themselves as London-specific services. The myth underneath many of these results is that living in a major city gives you a different (or faster) route to semaglutide. It doesn't.

Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine regulated by the MHRA. The rules governing who can prescribe it, and under what conditions, are set nationally. A prescriber in London follows exactly the same clinical criteria as one in Leeds or Bristol. What varies is availability and waiting times, particularly on the NHS, but the clinical threshold itself is fixed in law and in the product's licensed indications.

This matters because some sellers specifically target location-based searches. If you encounter a site offering semaglutide in London without a full clinical consultation, or pricing that looks remarkably low, those are genuine red flags. The MHRA has repeatedly warned about counterfeit weight-loss pens circulating online and via social media, and enforcement action in 2025 resulted in roughly 20 million doses of illegally traded weight-loss medicines, worth around £45 million, being seized. Reporting suspect sellers at the MHRA's Yellow Card scheme is the right course of action.

Who Wegovy is actually licensed for in the UK

The licensed eligibility criteria for Wegovy in the UK are straightforward. Adults with a BMI of 30 or above qualify, as do adults with a BMI of 27 to 29.9 who have at least one weight-related health condition, such as high blood pressure, raised cholesterol, type 2 diabetes or obstructive sleep apnoea. Lower BMI thresholds apply for people of South Asian, Chinese, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean backgrounds under UK clinical guidance. A BMI figure alone doesn't automatically mean treatment is appropriate; the prescriber looks at the full picture of your health, current medicines and medical history.

Wegovy is not licensed for people under 18, and it isn't recommended during pregnancy, while breastfeeding, or when trying to conceive. Certain medical histories (including pancreatitis and some thyroid conditions) require careful prescriber discussion.

On the NHS in London, access to Wegovy follows NICE's appraisal TA875, which recommends semaglutide for weight management for up to two years, within a specialist multidisciplinary weight management service. Waiting lists for those services in London, as across England, are commonly long. The private route (subject to the same clinical eligibility) doesn't require a referral or a wait for a specialist slot.

How semaglutide works, and what the evidence says

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. It mimics a gut hormone that the body releases after eating, acting on receptors in the brain and digestive system to reduce appetite and slow the rate at which the stomach empties. The result, for most people, is that they feel full sooner and stay full longer, which makes sustaining a calorie deficit considerably easier than trying to do so by willpower alone.

The STEP 1 trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, followed adults with obesity or overweight and at least one weight-related condition for 68 weeks. Participants taking 2.4 mg semaglutide weekly alongside lifestyle support lost an average of around 15% of their body weight. Since those original trials, a higher maintenance dose has been approved. The MHRA licensed the 7.2 mg Wegovy pen in April 2026, with trial data reporting approximately 20.7% average weight loss at 72 weeks, approaching the results seen with tirzepatide at its highest dose. The titration schedule for all Wegovy doses is set by the prescriber; the medicine always starts at a low dose and is increased gradually to reduce the likelihood of gastrointestinal side effects.

Side effects, long-term use and what arriving at your door actually looks like

The most commonly reported side effects with semaglutide are gastrointestinal: nausea, loose stools, constipation and indigestion are typical in the early weeks or after a dose increase. For most people these settle, usually within a couple of weeks. Serious side effects are less common but worth knowing about. In January 2026 the MHRA issued a Drug Safety Update specifically highlighting acute pancreatitis as an infrequent but potentially serious risk with GLP-1 medicines: severe stomach pain, especially pain that travels through to the back, with or without vomiting, warrants urgent medical attention.

Questions about how long semaglutide treatment can run are common. The evidence on long-term Wegovy use suggests that weight tends to return when treatment stops, which is why duration and any eventual stopping plan are discussed with the prescriber as part of ongoing care.
