The right disposal container for your Wegovy pen — and the misconceptions worth clearing up

The myth: you can just cap the pen and put it in the bin

This is the most common misconception our prescribers hear, and it is easy to see why. The Wegovy pen looks tidy once the cap is back on. It feels finished. But capping the pen does not make the needle safe for general waste, it is still a sharp, still potentially contaminated, and still capable of injuring a refuse collector, a child, or anyone else who opens a bin bag. UK regulations on the disposal of clinical waste apply to home users too, and the Patient Information Leaflet that comes with every pen is explicit: used pens go into a sharps container, not loose into household rubbish.

Worth knowing: the yellow-bin instinct (putting anything medical into the recycling) is equally wrong. Sharps contaminate recycling streams and create serious handling risks. The right container is not the recycling bin and not the general waste bin. That is what the guidance says, and it is straightforward once the misconception is set aside.

What a proper sharps container actually looks like, and where to get one

A sharps container for home use is a rigid plastic box, usually yellow, with a tamper-resistant lid designed so needles can be dropped in but not pulled back out. It carries a fill line and a final-lock mechanism. Standard sizes for home injectors are one litre and two litre. The one-litre version is right for most people on a once-weekly injection: a full 52-week year of Wegovy pens will comfortably fit in a 1-litre container with room to spare. Where to get one: your local council is the first port of call. Most English councils provide sharps containers free or at minimal cost under the NHS sharps collection service, contact your local authority or ask at your GP surgery. Some community pharmacies also supply them. There is no single national scheme, so the postcode does matter; five minutes on your council's website usually gives the answer.

Once the container is around three-quarters full (not to the fill line), it should be sealed and disposed of through the council's collection or drop-off route. Do not try to compress it or overfill it. A sealed sharps bin cannot be reopened, which is the point.

The correct disposal step at the end of each injection

Needle removal before disposal is not recommended for home users. The pen goes (capped, needle on) straight into the sharps container. This is partly for your own safety: removing a used needle carries a needlestick risk. It is also the step most clearly described in the Patient Information Leaflet supplied with every Wegovy pen.

A brief practical sequence: once the injection is complete and the pen has been held in place for the recommended count (see the leaflet), withdraw it, do not recap the needle by hand, and drop the whole pen into the open sharps container. The pen's outer cap (the large one, not the inner needle cover) can go in alongside it or into general waste, since it contains no sharp.

Disposal is one part of using Wegovy safely; the clinical side comes first. Wegovy (semaglutide) is licensed in the UK for weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above where a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes is present.
