Step 1, right after you inject: the pen goes back in the fridge

Position matters too. Store the pen away from the freezer compartment at the back of the fridge shelf, temperatures near the freezer wall can dip below zero. Never store the pen with the needle attached. Change the needle immediately before each injection, then dispose of it safely, a dedicated sharps container is the right way to do that in the UK. Recap the pen, not the used needle.

Step 2, travelling or away from home: the room-temperature rule

Life does not pause for a fridge. Wegovy can be kept at room temperature (below 30°C) for a limited period when you are away from home, again, your Patient Information Leaflet states the exact duration. Once that window has passed, the pen should be discarded even if doses remain. Do not try to cool it back down and restart the clock; the time accumulates.

When travelling, keep the pen in an insulated pouch rather than a bag left in a hot car or direct sunlight. For longer trips, a small travel cool-pack works well, just make sure the pen does not press directly against an ice pack, which risks localised freezing.

Step 3, checking expiry and knowing when to discard

Each Wegovy pen carries an expiry date printed on the label. That date applies to an unopened, correctly stored pen. Once opened, the clock changes: your Patient Information Leaflet gives a separate in-use expiry, the date by which you must have finished the pen, regardless of the printed expiry on the barrel. Whichever date comes first is the one that counts.

Signs that a pen may have been compromised: the solution looks cloudy or discoloured, particles are visible, or the pen was left outside permitted temperature ranges. In any of these situations, do not inject. Discard it and contact our team. What to do if something goes wrong with your pen

Accidents happen. A pen dropped on a hard floor, a power cut that left the fridge warm overnight, a holiday bag left in a sunny car, none of these are unusual. The principle is consistent: if you have any doubt about whether the pen has been stored correctly, do not use it. The cost of discarding a pen is far smaller than the risk of injecting degraded medicine.
