Wegovy storage once opened: what you need to know about keeping your pen safe

You've just used your first dose, here's what that pen needs next

Picture the moment after your first Wegovy injection. You recap the pen, you're probably relieved it wasn't as difficult as you expected, and then you wonder where to put it. The instinct is often the fridge (that's where it lived before you opened it) and for most people that's exactly right. Wegovy pens can go back in the refrigerator after use, as long as they stay between 2°C and 8°C and well away from the freezer compartment. The alternative is room temperature, up to 30°C. This is genuinely useful when you're travelling or your fridge isn't accessible, but it comes with a firm time limit. One practical note: if you order on a Monday, or around a holiday period, your pen will arrive with DPD the next working day in plain packaging. Keep it refrigerated as soon as you can after it arrives, don't leave it in the bag by the door all afternoon.

What happens if your Wegovy pen gets too warm, too cold, or is past the room-temperature limit

Semaglutide is a protein-based medicine and proteins are sensitive to temperature extremes. If a pen has been frozen, the structure of the medicine can be permanently altered; there's no safe way to thaw and continue using it. Discard a frozen pen and contact your prescriber before your next scheduled injection so they can advise on what to do about the missed dose in your titration schedule.

Overheating is a less dramatic but equally real risk. A pen left on a sunny windowsill, in a hot car glove box, or in a bag in direct sunlight on a warm day may reach temperatures well above 30°C. If you're unsure whether your pen has been exposed to excessive heat, the cautious step is to contact your prescriber or pharmacist rather than inject a potentially degraded medicine. There is no way to visually confirm that semaglutide is still active, the liquid looks the same regardless.

The room-temperature time limit works cumulatively. If you've kept the pen out of the fridge for three days across several outings, those days count toward the total. Keeping a simple note on your phone of when the pen first came out of the fridge is a habit that takes two seconds and removes all the guesswork. Needles, sharps disposal, and the small details that keep each injection safe

After every injection, the needle must come off. Leaving a needle attached to the pen between uses creates two risks: air can enter the cartridge over time, and the needle tip can become blocked or contaminated. Remove it immediately after injecting, cap it using the outer needle cap, and place it straight into a sharps container. A standard household bin is not appropriate for used needles. Never share a Wegovy pen with another person, even if they are also prescribed semaglutide at the same dose. Each pen is prescribed for one individual. Sharing risks contamination and is a medication safety issue regardless of the circumstances.

Before each injection, inspect the liquid in the pen. Wegovy should appear colourless to slightly yellow and clear. If you notice particles, cloudiness, or discolouration, do not inject, contact your prescriber. Storage questions become clinical questions the moment a missed or delayed dose is involved. Titration timing matters, and the decision about whether to take a late dose, skip it, or adjust your schedule is one for your prescribing clinician, not a general guide.
