Most people store their Wegovy pen in the fridge door without thinking twice. That works well as a default, but fridge doors experience more temperature swings than the main shelf every time they open, and some fridge models run warmer at the door than the thermostat suggests. If you have any doubt, a cheap fridge thermometer settles the question in a day.

The floor of the fridge is a different hazard. Pens placed near the freezer drawer or the back wall of a small fridge can partially freeze. Keep pens in their original carton. The cardboard is not decorative, it shields the medicine from light, which can degrade it over time. A pen left loose in a bright fridge is technically acceptable but worse than one in its box.

Taking your pen out of the fridge: the room-temperature decision

What the leaflet will not do is tell you what to do if you are halfway through a busy week, your pen sat in a warm kitchen for longer than permitted, and you are not sure whether to use it or replace it. In that situation, contact your prescriber. Do not simply inject and hope, semaglutide that has been heat-stressed may be less effective or, in the worst case, degraded in ways that affect tolerability. One practical tip: if you take your pen out of the fridge 30 minutes before injecting to let it reach room temperature, set a timer and put it back if you decide not to inject that session. Time out of the fridge is cumulative across the pen's life.

Travel, hot weather and holidays abroad

Travelling with Wegovy takes a little planning. Airlines permit insulin and injectable medicines in hand luggage with a letter from your prescriber or pharmacist, carry the original packaging and the Patient Information Leaflet. Checked luggage holds can freeze at altitude, so your pen should stay with you in the cabin. A soft insulated cool bag with a gel ice pack (wrapped so the pen does not touch the pack directly) works for surface journeys; pharmacies sell travel cases designed for injectable medicines.

Hot climates are a particular concern. A car parked in Spanish summer sun reaches temperatures that would compromise a pen within an hour. Beach bags left in direct sunlight are no different. If you are spending extended time in a warm country, a small travel fridge or a hotel minibar is the most reliable solution.

When to contact your prescriber or pharmacy

There are clear situations that warrant a call rather than a best guess. Use your pen if you are confident it has stayed within the conditions your leaflet specifies. Call us if you are not. The reasons to get in touch include: a pen that was left in a warm car for several hours; a pen that appears to have frozen and thawed; a pen that looks cloudy or has visible particles (semaglutide solution should be clear and colourless); or a delivery that arrived warm because of courier delays in hot weather.
