Start journey Learn moreMost people starting Wegovy want to know how long it takes to see results. The honest answer is that weight loss on semaglutide follows a gradual, dose-dependent curve — clinical trials ran for 68 weeks, and the biggest changes came in the second half of that period, not the first few weeks. These are prescription-only medicines requiring clinical assessment before a prescriber can determine suitability.

A lot of people come to Wegovy expecting the pen to do its heaviest lifting in week one. That's understandable — the appetite suppression can feel noticeable quite quickly, and early enthusiasm sometimes sets unrealistic benchmarks. The truth is more interesting than the expectation.
Wegovy is titrated deliberately. You start at 0.25mg, a dose so low it's essentially preparing your system for what comes next. From there the schedule moves through 0.5mg, 1.0mg and 1.7mg before arriving at 2.4mg, roughly one new step every four weeks, guided by your prescriber. That's up to 16 weeks before you're even at the maintenance dose. Weight loss during titration is real, but it's not the main event.
People who plateau in month two and assume the treatment isn't working often abandon something that would have produced significant change by month six. It's a pacing problem, not a failure of the medicine. The full picture of how long Wegovy takes to work is worth reading before drawing early conclusions.
During the titration phase, the priority is tolerability. Nausea, loose stools, burping and a reduced appetite are common; they tend to peak in the days after each dose increase and settle again within a week or two. Many people find the appetite change the most noticeable effect even at low doses, meals feel satisfying sooner, and the background noise of hunger quietens.
Weight loss at this stage is modest by design. The body is adjusting to a rising level of semaglutide, and the dose that drives meaningful fat reduction is 1.7mg and above. Tracking weekly changes at 0.25mg and declaring the medicine ineffective is like judging a marathon by the first two minutes.
The Wegovy treatment overview covers what to expect from each pen in more detail, and the semaglutide page explains the mechanism behind the schedule.
The STEP 1 trial (68 weeks, 2.4mg semaglutide versus placebo, in adults with obesity or overweight and a weight-related condition) reported an average body-weight reduction of around 15%, as documented in the New England Journal of Medicine. That figure comes from a population on the maintenance dose for most of that period, not from four weeks at 0.25mg.
Progress during this phase is not linear. Most people lose weight more quickly in months three through five and then see a gradual deceleration as the body adapts. A plateau between months six and eight is normal, not a signal to stop. The semaglutide timeline described in detail on the Wegovy weight-loss timeline page maps this curve more precisely.
For those on the newer 7.2mg dose (approved by the MHRA on 14 April 2026, as confirmed in the official gov.uk announcement) trial data suggested approximately 20.7% average weight reduction over 72 weeks, narrowing the gap with tirzepatide. The timeline structure is the same; the destination is higher. Whether a specific dose or pen format is appropriate is confirmed at consultation, not assumed.
The timeline varies between individuals, and several factors shape it. Starting weight matters: someone with a higher BMI will often see larger absolute losses earlier, even if the percentage change is similar. Adherence to the dose schedule, consistent lifestyle changes alongside treatment, and how quickly your body tolerates dose increases all play a role.
The factors influencing weight-loss timing on Wegovy are worth understanding before starting, and it's reasonable to ask your prescriber what a realistic target looks like at your starting point. Comparing your week-eight results to someone else's week-forty results is a reliable source of unnecessary worry.
