STEP 1, the landmark phase-3 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, recruited 1,961 adults without diabetes and ran for 68 weeks. STEP 2 and STEP 3 extended the programme to people with type 2 diabetes and those already in intensive behavioural programmes. The follow-on programme exploring the higher 7.2 mg dose is also concluded. Semaglutide is also available in two new forms, what that means for your options

The Wegovy story moved quickly in the first half of 2026. Beyond the 7.2 mg injection, the MHRA approved the first oral GLP-1 medicine licensed for weight management in the UK on 11 June 2026: Wegovy tablets (oral semaglutide with an absorption enhancer). The tablet schedule runs from a 1.5 mg starting dose up to a 25 mg maintenance dose, taken once daily on an empty stomach. No refrigeration is required, which some people find simpler.

Trial data for the tablets (OASIS 4, 307 adults, 64 weeks) showed an average weight loss of around 13.6% versus roughly 2.4% with placebo.
