What are the licensed weight loss injections and how do they work?

Two medicines are licensed in the UK for weight management: Mounjaro (tirzepatide, made by Eli Lilly) and Wegovy (semaglutide, made by Novo Nordisk). Both mimic gut hormones that regulate appetite and slow how quickly the stomach empties, which reduces hunger between meals. Mounjaro goes a step further by activating two receptors (GIP and GLP-1) making it the only dual-agonist weight-loss medicine licensed here. Wegovy acts on GLP-1 alone.

In clinical trials, tirzepatide produced average weight reductions of around 20–21% over 72 weeks at the highest dose, with semaglutide reaching around 15% at its standard 2.4mg maintenance dose, according to trial data reviewed by NICE in their tirzepatide appraisal (TA1026). Treatment with either medicine starts at a low dose (2.5mg for Mounjaro, 0.25mg for Wegovy) to let your system adjust before the prescriber steps things up gradually. Do Edinburgh residents have to use a local clinic?

No. Scotland's geography makes this worth saying plainly. Regulated online pharmacies hold the same GPhC registration and legal authority to dispense prescription medicines as any high-street pharmacy in Edinburgh, Inverness or anywhere else. BMI alone is not the whole picture; a prescriber looks at the full clinical context. Lower BMI thresholds can apply for some ethnic backgrounds under UK guidance.

The NHS route in Scotland operates under separate thresholds and phases from the English rollout NICE describes in TA1026.
