What Does Semaglutide Smell and Taste Like?

Does the Wegovy injection solution actually have a smell?

The short answer is almost certainly not, at least nothing you would notice in normal use. The active ingredient in Wegovy, semaglutide, is a synthetic analogue of a naturally occurring gut hormone (GLP-1). In the injectable formulation it is dissolved in a water-based solution at very low concentration. The excipients (the non-active ingredients that stabilise the solution) include disodium phosphate dihydrate, propylene glycol and hydrochloric acid or sodium hydroxide for pH adjustment. None of these produce a strong odour at the concentrations used.

What most patients actually notice when they uncap the pen is nothing in particular, or perhaps a faint neutral scent from the plastic cartridge. That is normal. Some people are particularly sensitive to smells and pick up something very faint. That alone is not a concern. What matters is whether the smell is noticeably different from your previous pens. When should an unusual smell make you stop and check?

A strong, sour, acrid or otherwise unexpected odour from your Wegovy pen is worth taking seriously. Semaglutide must be stored refrigerated at 2–8°C. If the pen has been exposed to heat (left in a car, close to a radiator, or shipped without proper cold-chain handling) the solution can degrade. Degradation does not always produce a visible change, but it can produce an altered smell before any cloudiness becomes apparent.

There is also the question of supply. Since the MHRA first warned publicly about counterfeit weight-loss pens in October 2023, enforcement has continued to find fake products in the UK supply chain; in 2025 investigators seized roughly 20 million doses of illegally traded weight-loss medicines worth around £45 million at street value, and raided an illicit manufacturing site producing counterfeit tirzepatide pens. Counterfeit pens have contained insulin in place of the labelled medicine. A different smell, unexpected texture or any signs the packaging has been tampered with are all reasons to stop, not inject, and report the product via the MHRA's Yellow Card scheme. Does semaglutide smell or taste different in tablet form?

The oral Wegovy tablet (approved by the MHRA on 11 June 2026 as the first oral GLP-1 medicine licensed for weight management in the UK) works very differently from the injection. The tablet co-formulates semaglutide with an absorption enhancer called SNAC, which helps the molecule survive the stomach environment long enough to be absorbed through the stomach lining.

The tablet itself is small and film-coated. Most people describe it as mildly chalky or neutral, with no strong taste. It does not dissolve under the tongue or need to be chewed, it is swallowed whole with a small amount of plain water. Because the absorption mechanism is delicate (the stomach's acid environment is what the SNAC is working around), the tablet must be taken first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, waiting at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking coffee or taking other medicines. That timing is clinical guidance from the approved prescribing information, not a lifestyle preference.

Does semaglutide change how your body smells?

This question comes up more than you might expect. The honest answer is: there is no established clinical evidence that semaglutide directly changes body odour. It is not excreted through sweat in a form that alters scent. However, GLP-1 medicines do change eating patterns substantially (reduced calorie intake, shifts in food choices, and sometimes periods of reduced hydration from early nausea) and changes in diet can affect how sweat smells, because some of that comes down to what you have eaten. Ketone production increases when calorie intake falls sharply, and ketones on the breath have a faintly sweet or acetone-like quality some people notice.
