Start journey Learn moreMost people starting Wegovy focus on what to cut out. The honest answer is that no food is absolutely forbidden, but certain choices make nausea, reflux and slowed digestion much harder to manage, and can work directly against the treatment's effect. Wegovy (semaglutide) slows how quickly your stomach empties, which is part of why it reduces appetite — and that same mechanism is why a large, fatty or fizzy meal can leave you feeling genuinely unwell. These are prescription-only medicines, so your prescriber or the NHS semaglutide page is your first port of call for personal guidance; what follows is a clear, practical account of what the evidence suggests and why.

A common assumption is that because Wegovy reduces hunger so dramatically, what you eat matters less than before. It's understandable. When you genuinely don't feel like eating much, it seems logical that the quality of what you do eat is secondary. But semaglutide works alongside dietary change, not instead of it, and the foods most likely to cause problems are precisely the ones that are easy to reach for in small quantities.
High-fat foods are the main culprit. Things like fried chicken, creamy pasta, pastries, crisps and full-fat takeaways slow gastric emptying even further on top of what Wegovy already does. The result is prolonged fullness that tips from uncomfortable into genuinely nauseating. Patients describe it as feeling as though food just sits there for hours. That's not a metaphor, it's physiology.
Ultra-processed foods with a lot of added sugar cause a second problem. They tend to be calorie-dense despite low volume, which can partially offset the reduced appetite. Over time, regularly choosing these foods can slow the weight-loss effect that clinical trials showed when participants also made dietary changes. The NHS healthy weight guidance recommends prioritising whole foods, adequate protein and fibre for exactly this reason, advice that applies with particular force on GLP-1 treatment.
Worth knowing: spicy food is not off-limits for everyone, but many people find their tolerance drops noticeably on Wegovy, especially in the first few weeks at a new dose. If you want a fuller picture of which foods to avoid while on Wegovy, including how high-fat and spicy options can affect tolerability at each stage of treatment, our dedicated page covers the detail. The same goes for very acidic foods like citrus juice and tomato-based sauces if reflux is already a problem.
Alcohol doesn't need to be eliminated, but it does need thought. On Wegovy, blood sugar can respond less predictably after drinking, and the usual warning signs of low blood sugar (dizziness, light-headedness, sweating) can be harder to distinguish from the treatment's own side effects. Drinking on a near-empty stomach (which is more common when appetite is reduced) intensifies this.
There is also a practical concern around calories. A single large glass of wine adds around 200 kcal without any nutritional value and without triggering the satiety signals that food provides. When overall intake is already lower, alcohol can represent a disproportionate share of daily energy without your noticing.
Fizzy drinks (including diet versions) can worsen bloating and burping, both of which are already common in the early weeks of treatment. Sparkling water can cause the same issue for some people. Flat water, herbal tea and squash are generally better tolerated. Our guide to what to avoid eating on Wegovy covers drinks alongside solid foods, with practical advice on what tends to be better tolerated as your dose increases. Our practical guide to eating on Wegovy covers hydration in more detail alongside protein and meal-timing advice.
One thing worth building into your routine: drink water consistently throughout the day rather than catching up at mealtimes. Large volumes of liquid with food can amplify that uncomfortable full feeling when the stomach is already emptying slowly.
Knowing what to avoid is only half of it. The more useful question is what actually works well alongside Wegovy, and here the picture is straightforward: protein, fibre and volume from vegetables are your best tools.
Protein deserves particular attention because muscle loss can accompany rapid weight reduction. Eating enough protein (lean meat, fish, eggs, legumes, Greek yoghurt) helps preserve lean mass while fat is lost. On a reduced appetite it can feel like a lot to prioritise, which is why smaller, more frequent meals often work better than three large ones. If you're thinking about how to structure meals practically, our guide to what to eat on Wegovy covers that in full.
Foods with good fibre content (vegetables, pulses, oats, whole grains) help maintain healthy digestion and slow glucose absorption, which complements what semaglutide does metabolically. They also fill the plate in a way that makes smaller portions feel more satisfying.
A practical note from our prescribers: one of the questions they hear most often is whether there's a fixed list of banned foods. There isn't, though our page on Wegovy foods to avoid is a useful reference if you want a clear summary of the categories that cause the most difficulty for most people. The guidance is about patterns, not rules. A single biscuit with a cup of tea on a Tuesday afternoon is not going to derail anything. What creates problems is consistently choosing foods that are difficult to digest, calorie-dense and nutritionally thin, especially in the first few months while your body is adjusting. If you're finding certain foods trigger side effects consistently, note them and raise them at your next clinical review.
