Start journey Learn moreNausea is the side effect people on Wegovy ask about most. It tends to peak in the first week or two after starting or after a dose increase, and for most people it eases considerably once the body adjusts. The good news: there are practical, evidence-backed things you can do to reduce it. Wegovy (semaglutide) is a prescription-only medicine, so any changes to how or when you take it should be discussed with your prescriber — but the day-to-day habits below are ones our clinical team actively talk through with patients. A broader look at Wegovy side effects is available if you want the full picture first.

Semaglutide slows the rate at which the stomach empties. That is part of how it reduces appetite, but it also means food lingers longer than you are used to, which the brain can interpret as queasiness. The effect is most pronounced early in treatment and after each dose step up.
Knowing the cause points directly at the fix. If the stomach is emptying more slowly, putting a large meal into it is asking for trouble. Eating as you always did (big portions, eaten quickly, rich in fat or spice) creates the worst conditions. Eating less, more slowly, and choosing blander foods gives the stomach less to complain about.
This is a question our prescribers hear most weeks: "I felt fine at 0.5mg but now I've moved to 1mg the nausea's back, is that normal?" It usually is. Each dose increase can briefly reset the adjustment clock. The approach that helped at the start tends to help again. The NHS semaglutide medicines page confirms that nausea and related GI symptoms are expected at the start of treatment or after dose changes and usually pass.
If nausea is not settling after two to three weeks at a given dose, that is worth raising with your prescriber before the next increase. Pushing through on a schedule that does not suit you rarely helps.
Small, frequent meals tend to work better than two or three large ones. A few practical adjustments that patients find genuinely useful:
Eat slowly and stop before you feel full. Semaglutide reduces appetite signals, so fullness can arrive suddenly. Eating past that point is a reliable nausea trigger.
Avoid very fatty, greasy or heavily spiced food, particularly in the weeks after starting or after an increase. These take longer to digest even under normal circumstances; on Wegovy the delay compounds. Plain, lower-fat options (rice, toast, boiled potatoes, plain chicken) tend to sit better.
Stay upright after eating. Lying down shortly after a meal slows gastric emptying further. Sitting or walking for at least 30 minutes helps.
Keep fluids steady. Sipping water or plain drinks throughout the day, rather than drinking large amounts at mealtimes, reduces the volume in the stomach at any one time. Carbonated drinks can worsen bloating and nausea for some people.
Time your injection thoughtfully. Some people find injecting in the evening means any peak nausea happens overnight when they are asleep. Others prefer morning. Neither is clinically superior; it is a personal call, but worth experimenting with, after discussing with your prescriber. You can read about what to take for nausea on Wegovy if you want to explore whether any over-the-counter remedies might help alongside these habits.
Most Wegovy-related nausea is an inconvenience, not a danger. But some symptoms that start as nausea can indicate something more serious, and it is important to know the difference.
Seek medical help promptly if you experience severe stomach pain that does not ease and radiates toward the back, with or without vomiting. This pattern can signal acute pancreatitis. In January 2026 the MHRA issued a Drug Safety Update specifically reminding prescribers and patients that GLP-1 medicines including semaglutide carry a known, if infrequent, risk of pancreatitis, and that symptoms should not be dismissed.
Also get medical help for: signs of dehydration from persistent vomiting or diarrhoea (dizziness, reduced urination, dark urine); symptoms of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or lips, or difficulty breathing; yellowing of the skin or eyes, which can point to gallbladder problems.
Ordinary nausea that is uncomfortable but manageable does not need an A&E visit. If you are unsure, call 111. And if your nausea is making it very difficult to eat or drink for more than a day, contact your prescriber, our team is reachable seven days a week.
For those exploring the broader range of GI effects alongside nausea, managing Wegovy side effects generally covers the full picture. Specifically on the sulphur burp side effect that some people find more surprising than nausea, this page goes into more detail.
Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine, which means a prescriber is involved at every stage, not just at the start. If nausea is stopping you from eating adequately, disrupting sleep, or not settling after two to three weeks at a dose, that is a clinical conversation, not just a lifestyle tweak to push through alone.
Our prescribers at nume discuss side effects as a standard part of the consultation and every clinical review. That includes which habits help, whether the timing of the injection is working, and whether the dose trajectory is right for you. Wegovy's full licensed schedule runs from a starting dose up through 2.4mg, with each step taken over roughly four weeks to give the body time to adjust, precisely because GI side effects tend to cluster around dose changes.
If you have not started treatment yet and want to understand what to expect, start your free consultation and our prescribers will talk through suitability, the dose journey, and side-effect management before any prescription is written. There is no obligation and no charge for the consultation itself.
