Wegovy or Mounjaro: which costs less in the UK private market?

What UK pricing data actually shows about the two medicines

Eli Lilly announced a significant list price increase for Mounjaro from 1 September 2025. The highest available dose moved from roughly £122 to around £330 per four-week pen at list price, according to widely reported figures at the time. As a result, private providers have generally priced higher Mounjaro doses (10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg) at somewhere in the £200–£375 range per month, depending on the pharmacy. Starter and mid-range doses sit lower.

Wegovy's pricing has remained comparatively stable across the standard 0.25mg-to-2.4mg titration pathway, with most UK private providers pricing the 2.4mg maintenance dose in the £150–£230 range per month, as typically reported. On those figures, Wegovy can look cheaper at maintenance — but that comparison shifts once you factor in that Mounjaro's starter doses are priced below its maintenance doses, just as Wegovy's are.

The MHRA-approved Wegovy 7.2mg pen, confirmed on 14 April 2026, adds a further variable: a higher maintenance dose that may come with its own pricing tier. Reported trial data suggest around 20.7% average weight loss at 7.2mg over 72 weeks, narrowing the gap with tirzepatide's results. Pricing for the 7.2mg pen is still settling across the private market. If cost per kilogram of weight lost were the measure, the picture would look quite different from a simple monthly comparison, though no one should choose a medicine on that basis alone.

What headline prices often leave out of the calculation

A quoted monthly figure from any provider (nume, a competitor, a price-comparison site) rarely tells you the full story. Some charge a separate consultation fee on top. Others add a prescription-issuance fee, or bill delivery separately, or tie you to a subscription that auto-renews whether your dose changes or not. Aftercare, where it exists at all, may be a paid add-on rather than included.

There is also the question of clinical review on repeat orders. Legitimate prescribing of these medicines requires reassessment before each supply, not just once at the start. A provider that omits that step isn't saving you money; it's removing something that should be there. Why price is the wrong starting point for this decision

NICE's appraisal of tirzepatide (TA1026, published December 2024) and its earlier appraisal of semaglutide (TA875) both assessed these medicines on the basis of clinical benefit, safety profile and the infrastructure needed to support their use, not on which is cheaper to dispense. The head-to-head SURMOUNT-5 trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2025, found tirzepatide produced greater average weight reduction than semaglutide 2.4mg over 72 weeks. Wegovy 7.2mg narrows that gap. But average trial results don't determine which medicine suits a specific person: tolerability, medical history, other medicines being taken, and clinical response all factor in.
