Start journey Learn moreWhen you're on Wegovy, what you eat matters more than most people expect. Semaglutide reduces appetite significantly, which means smaller portions almost happen automatically — but if those smaller portions are nutritionally thin, you can lose muscle alongside fat, feel drained, and struggle with side effects that good food choices often dampen. The medicine does part of the work; the food you put on your plate does the rest. Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine, so a prescriber assesses whether it's right for you before any treatment begins — but once you're on it, the practical question of what to eat is one our prescribers hear almost every week.

With appetite significantly reduced on Wegovy, most people eat considerably less food overall. That's the point. The problem is that a smaller diet low in protein can lead to muscle loss alongside fat loss, and muscle loss slows your metabolism over time, making maintenance harder once treatment ends.
Aim to get protein into every meal, even if the meal is small. Eggs, chicken, fish, Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese, lentils, tofu, tinned beans: these are practical, low-prep options that deliver real protein without requiring large volumes of food. A palm-sized portion of meat or fish, or a pot of high-protein yoghurt with lunch, makes a meaningful difference when total intake is low.
People on semaglutide who struggle with nausea sometimes find red meat or very rich proteins harder to tolerate early in treatment. If that's you, fish and poultry are often better tolerated, and dairy-based protein (Greek yoghurt, soft cheese) tends to sit more comfortably on a sensitive stomach. Adjusting what you eat when on Wegovy based on what your body accepts, rather than what a list prescribes, is usually the more practical approach. Our Wegovy overview covers what to expect across the full treatment period, including the adjustment phase.
The NHS's healthy weight guidance consistently emphasises protein and vegetables as the foundation of a sustainable reduced-calorie diet, advice that applies with even more force when your appetite can no longer act as a natural cue.
Nausea is the most commonly reported side effect on semaglutide, particularly after starting or moving up a dose. It isn't inevitable, and for most people it settles within a week or two. Food choices play a direct role in how bad it is.
Small, frequent meals tend to outperform three large ones when your stomach is emptying more slowly than usual. Bland, low-fat foods (plain rice, crackers, boiled potatoes, bread, cooked vegetables) cause less irritation than rich, fatty or highly spiced dishes. Greasy takeaways, cream sauces and fried food are the most reliably reported triggers; that's not a moral point, just a practical one.
Cold or room-temperature food is often better tolerated than hot food when nausea is active. Ginger (fresh, in tea, or as a biscuit) has some evidence behind it for general nausea. Staying upright for at least an hour after eating, not lying down straight after a meal, helps with reflux specifically.
Alcohol slows gastric emptying and can worsen nausea; it also adds calories with no nutritional value. Most people on Wegovy find their tolerance for alcohol drops noticeably, worth knowing before a social occasion. If nausea is severe or persistent, the right step is talking to your prescriber, not pushing through alone. Our aftercare team is available seven days a week for exactly this kind of question.
Constipation is the other common GI side effect on Wegovy, partly because food intake drops and partly because the gut slows down. Dietary fibre is the main lever you can pull. Vegetables, wholegrains, oats, fruit with the skin on, and legumes all help keep things moving, and most of them are also nutrient-dense, which matters when total food volume is low.
Hydration is undersold. Drinking enough water throughout the day supports digestion, reduces the intensity of some nausea, and helps with the headaches some people notice early in treatment. A rough target of six to eight glasses daily is reasonable; more if you're active or it's warm. Soups and broths count, and they're an easy way to get both fluid and sodium without a large meal.
Micronutrients (iron, calcium, B vitamins, vitamin D) can fall short when eating less. A standard daily multivitamin is a sensible safety net; it doesn't replace varied food, but it covers gaps. Our detailed guide to what to eat on Wegovy goes further on specific nutrient targets. If you have a condition that makes nutritional deficiency a real risk, a dietitian referral is worth raising with your prescriber.
One thing many people don't anticipate is that Wegovy can suppress appetite so effectively that eating feels like a chore. That creates a specific problem: skipping meals entirely is tempting, but it often means missing protein and micronutrients that matter for how you feel day to day.
If eating feels impossible, think about calorie-dense but easy-to-eat options in small amounts: a protein shake, a small bowl of Greek yoghurt with fruit, a couple of boiled eggs, a slice of wholegrain toast with peanut butter. None of these require cooking, none require a large appetite, and all of them deliver something useful. Liquid nutrition is fine as a bridge, it's not a long-term replacement for food, but on days when appetite is near zero, it keeps the nutritional floor in place.
For the days when appetite returns or is less suppressed (often mid-week, between doses), understanding what to eat when you are on Wegovy during those windows can help you lean into vegetables, wholegrains and protein rather than high-sugar or high-fat foods that may spike and crash energy quickly. If appetite suppression is a consistent problem, that page addresses it in more depth. Cost and access questions about treatment are covered on our Wegovy price comparison page.
Wegovy works best when the lifestyle changes alongside it are real. If you're considering treatment, a free consultation with our prescribers is the starting point, they'll look at the full picture before anything is prescribed.
