The myth: the lowest listed price is the cheapest route

When you search for weight loss injections online, you'll find prices that range from surprisingly low to noticeably high, and it's tempting to treat them like supermarket shelves. The misconception is that the lowest number wins. It doesn't, and here's why.

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide) are both Prescription-Only Medicines. UK law requires a clinical assessment before either can be dispensed, there is no legal route to them through a weight loss injection service that skips that step. The MHRA has been explicit that these medicines are not assessed as quick or cosmetic fixes, and a genuine provider must employ a qualified prescriber to review every patient. That work has a cost. When a headline price looks far below the market norm, it's worth asking what has been stripped out to get there, or whether the medicine is genuine at all.

The MHRA seized approximately 20 million doses of illegally traded weight-loss medicines worth around £45 million in 2025 alone, and the first illicit UK manufacturing site producing counterfeit tirzepatide pens was raided in October 2025. Fake pens have been found to contain insulin rather than the stated medicine, with serious consequences for the people who used them. What most headline prices leave out

Private weight loss treatment is priced in different ways across the UK market, and the stated monthly figure doesn't always tell the full story. Some providers charge separately for the consultation, the prescription, or both. Delivery fees (sometimes per order, sometimes monthly) can add up quickly across a treatment that typically runs for many months. Aftercare, dose-review support and access to a prescriber between orders are frequently either absent or gated behind an additional fee.

That matters clinically, not just financially. Titration from a starter dose upward requires a prescriber to review how you're tolerating treatment before approving the next step. If that review isn't built into the price, it either doesn't happen properly or you pay again each time. For a treatment that involves multiple dose stages, those additional charges compound. A £30 gap per month between two providers can evaporate quickly once all the line items are added.

It's also worth noting that Mounjaro's list price increased substantially from September 2025, with the highest-dose pen rising from around £122 to around £330 per four-week pen at the manufacturer level.
