When will Mounjaro be available on prescription — and can you get it now?

If you've been Googling this question, you're probably frustrated. You've read that Mounjaro is licensed, that NICE has approved it, and yet your GP says it isn't available yet on the NHS. All of that is true at the same time, and it makes perfect sense once the distinction between a licence and NHS commissioning is clear.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency granted Mounjaro its UK weight-management licence in November 2023. That means it is legal to prescribe, full stop. What it doesn't mean is that NHS England has commissioned it for routine GP prescribing across the country. Those are two separate decisions, and the second one follows NICE guidance plus a phased rollout plan. Whether a private prescription is an option for you right now is a different question, and the answer there is simpler: yes, subject to a clinical assessment.

NICE published its recommendation for tirzepatide (TA1026) in December 2024, updated in September 2025. It recommends the medicine for adults with a BMI of 35 or above and at least one weight-related health condition, with lower BMI thresholds for certain ethnic backgrounds under NICE's published appraisal. That recommendation is what unlocked the NHS commissioning process, but commissioning is phased deliberately to match supply and clinical capacity.

The NHS rollout phases: who qualifies and when

NHS England began commissioning Mounjaro for weight management in June 2025. The rollout is structured in three cohorts, each with progressively broader criteria.

The first cohort, active from June 2025, covers adults with a BMI of 40 or above and four or more of five specific conditions: high blood pressure, dyslipidaemia, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, or type 2 diabetes. The second cohort, which activated on 23 June 2026, covers a BMI of 35 to 39.9 with four or more of those same conditions. A third cohort (BMI 40 or above with three qualifying conditions) is expected around March 2027. Ethnic-background BMI adjustments of 2.5 kg/m² apply throughout. Even meeting these criteria doesn't guarantee a prescription arrives quickly. GP practices opted into the new prescribing contract from April 2026, but participation varies by practice and area. Private prescriptions: the route that's open right now

For adults who don't meet the current NHS cohort criteria, or who simply don't want to wait, a private prescription is the legal alternative. The eligibility criteria for private prescribing follow the medicine's licensed indications: a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above alongside a weight-related condition such as hypertension, prediabetes, high cholesterol, or obstructive sleep apnoea.
