Which pharmaceutical company makes Wegovy — and why does it matter?

The misconception worth clearing up first: Wegovy, Ozempic, and Rybelsus are not the same product

A lot of people searching for the company behind Wegovy are actually trying to untangle why the same active ingredient (semaglutide) appears under several different brand names. The short answer is that Novo Nordisk intentionally developed semaglutide for more than one medical purpose, and regulators grant separate licences for each. Ozempic (semaglutide 0.5mg, 1mg or 2mg weekly injection) is licensed in the UK for type 2 diabetes, not for weight management. Rybelsus is an oral semaglutide tablet licensed for type 2 diabetes at 3mg, 7mg and 14mg doses. Neither of these is Wegovy, and neither should be used as a substitute for it.

Wegovy, by contrast, was designed and trialled specifically for obesity. The STEP 1 trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, found an average body-weight reduction of around 15% over 68 weeks at the 2.4mg maintenance dose. What Novo Nordisk actually produces under the Wegovy name in the UK

There are now two distinct Wegovy formats holding UK MHRA authorisation. The original weekly injection, available in doses escalating from 0.25mg up to the 2.4mg maintenance dose, has been on the UK market since Novo Nordisk received its licence. A higher 7.2mg dose was then approved, and on 14 April 2026 the MHRA separately approved a dedicated single-dose 7.2mg pen (a pre-set weekly injection with an auto-dosing mechanism and built-in covered needle) for adults with a BMI of 30 or above. Trials at 7.2mg reported average weight loss of around 20.7% over 72 weeks, narrowing the gap with tirzepatide at its highest doses.

More recently, on 11 June 2026, the MHRA approved Wegovy tablets, the first oral GLP-1 medicine licensed for weight management in the UK and the first in Europe. The tablet contains the same semaglutide molecule, co-formulated with an absorption enhancer called SNAC, and escalates from a 1.5mg starting dose through to a 25mg maintenance dose. This is an entirely different product from Rybelsus; the dose numbers are different, the licence is different, and the two must not be confused. All of these products originate from Novo Nordisk's authorised supply chain. Pens or tablets that arrive through any other route (social media sellers, unverified websites, sellers offering them without a prescription) carry real risks. The MHRA has warned publicly about counterfeit weight-loss pens, including fake versions of semaglutide products, and has made large seizures of counterfeit medicines.
