Start journey Learn moreYes, Mounjaro can help with significant weight loss for people who meet the clinical criteria and take it alongside changes to diet and activity. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial, adults at the highest dose lost around 20–21% of their body weight on average over 72 weeks — a result that placed tirzepatide among the most effective licensed weight-loss medicines in the UK. That said, Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine: no pharmacist or prescriber can tell you it will work for you specifically without first assessing your health history, current medications and BMI. What the science does say clearly is that for the right candidate, the biology behind how Mounjaro drives weight loss is well understood, and the clinical trial results behind it are substantial.

Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, which acts on two receptors simultaneously: the GIP receptor and the GLP-1 receptor. Both are involved in the body's regulation of appetite, fullness and blood-sugar levels after eating. By activating both pathways at once, tirzepatide slows gastric emptying so food stays in the stomach longer, reduces hunger signals from the gut to the brain, and helps the body use insulin more effectively. The result, for most people, is that they feel full sooner and stay full longer, and eat less as a consequence.
This dual mechanism is what makes tirzepatide the only medicine of its kind licensed for weight management in the UK. A single GLP-1 agonist like semaglutide acts on one receptor; tirzepatide activates two. Whether that translates to a meaningful difference in your own results depends on individual biology, but the trial data does suggest the dual action produces larger average weight reductions than single-pathway options. The NHS tirzepatide patient information explains the mechanism clearly if you want the full picture.
Weight loss on Mounjaro tends to be gradual and sustained rather than dramatic in the first few weeks. The starting dose of 2.5mg is deliberately low, its job is to let your system adjust, not to deliver the full effect. Therapeutic benefit builds as the dose is titrated upward by your prescriber over subsequent months.
The SURMOUNT-1 trial recruited around 2,500 adults with obesity and no type 2 diabetes, who took tirzepatide alongside lifestyle changes for 72 weeks. At the highest dose (15mg), average weight reduction was around 20–21%. That is a substantial figure by any clinical measure. The SURMOUNT-5 trial then compared tirzepatide directly to semaglutide 2.4mg and found tirzepatide produced greater average weight loss, results that NICE cited in its December 2024 appraisal of tirzepatide (TA1026).
What the trials cannot tell you is exactly how much weight you personally will lose. Trial results are averages across large groups. Some participants lost more; some lost less. Factors that influence individual response include starting weight, dietary habits, physical activity, other medications and how well the dose titration goes. If you want to understand how likely it is that Mounjaro will help you specifically, the honest answer is that a prescriber's assessment of your individual situation is the closest you will get to a meaningful prediction.
One thing the evidence does suggest consistently: Mounjaro works best when combined with a reduced-calorie diet and regular physical activity. The licence reflects this, treatment is indicated alongside lifestyle changes, not instead of them. A question our prescribers hear regularly is whether the injection does all the work. It does not, and it is better to know that upfront than to be disappointed three months in.
The UK licence covers adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 and above if there is at least one weight-related condition present, things like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, or obstructive sleep apnoea. Lower thresholds apply for some ethnic backgrounds under UK guidance. But meeting the BMI threshold is the beginning of the assessment, not the end of it. A prescriber also looks at your current medications, your medical history and whether any contraindications apply.
People who are most likely to do well on Mounjaro tend to be those who can commit to the lifestyle element alongside treatment and who titrate the dose steadily under clinical guidance. Dropping out early, or reducing the dose without clinical advice, typically leads to less weight loss overall. How quickly you notice the effects also varies, some people feel less hungry within days; others notice the shift more gradually as the dose increases.
For a broader sense of the options available, our weight-loss treatment overview covers how Mounjaro sits alongside other licensed medicines. If cost is a factor in your thinking, our Mounjaro pricing page sets out what private treatment involves. NICE's recommendation (TA1026) also outlines the NHS eligibility criteria, which are stricter and phased in gradually, the private route through a regulated pharmacy like ours removes the waiting list, subject to clinical suitability.
Mounjaro is not a short course. Most people who see meaningful weight loss have been on treatment for six months or more, with the dose gradually increased by their prescriber as tolerance allows. Side effects are most common in the early weeks (nausea, looser stools, a reduced appetite that can occasionally tip into not wanting to eat much at all) and they typically ease as the body adjusts. If you want detail on those early weeks, our tirzepatide information page covers them fully.
If you do start treatment through nume, here is what happens in practice. Your consultation is reviewed by a GPhC-registered Independent Prescriber, a real clinician reads your answers, not software. If approved, your prescription is dispatched the same day (for orders before 12pm, Monday to Friday) and arrives the next working day via DPD, tracked to your door, in plain unbranded packaging. The pen itself is a pre-filled KwikPen; each contains four weekly doses. Details on how the treatment plan typically unfolds are worth reading before you decide.
Our Mounjaro treatment page is the most thorough starting point if you are still at the research stage. When you are ready to take a step, our prescribers are available through a free consultation, and aftercare is included, seven days a week, for as long as you are on treatment. Speak to our prescribers when you feel ready.
