Start journey Learn moreThe best ways to lose weight on Mounjaro centre on working with what the medicine does biologically — reducing appetite, slowing digestion and reshaping hunger signals — rather than fighting against your body. Most people lose weight on Mounjaro in clinical trials; the gap between average and excellent results comes down to a handful of consistent habits. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription-only medicine: a clinician decides whether it is suitable for you based on your full medical picture, not BMI alone.

There is a common misconception that Mounjaro does the work so the diet doesn't matter. It isn't true. What changes is your appetite; what you eat when you do feel hungry still shapes the quality of the weight you lose.
Protein is the priority. On any form of significant calorie restriction, the body will use muscle as fuel if dietary protein is too low. Aim to build each meal around a palm-sized portion of lean meat, fish, eggs, legumes or dairy before filling the rest of the plate. Most adults need somewhere in the range of 1.2–1.6g of protein per kilogram of bodyweight daily; on Mounjaro, landing at the higher end of that range protects muscle mass when your intake drops. The NHS Live Well healthy weight guidance provides a useful baseline for balanced eating alongside any weight-management programme.
Fibre is the second lever. Vegetables, legumes and wholegrains slow glucose absorption, support your gut microbiome and extend the sense of fullness Mounjaro already creates. Practical target: fill half your plate with non-starchy vegetables at main meals. Hydration matters alongside this, constipation is one of the more common side effects, and fibre without adequate fluid makes it worse.
Ultra-processed foods and alcohol deserve a specific mention. Both can independently blunt the appetite-suppressing effect and worsen nausea. Cutting back on both is one of the most consistently useful changes reported by people on treatment. If you want a full picture of how food choices interact with the medication, our guide on how to lose weight on Mounjaro walks through the practical eating approach in detail, alongside our separate guide on the best way to lose weight on Mounjaro which covers the broader strategy.
Exercise on Mounjaro does not need to be dramatic. What it needs to be is the right kind.
Cardiovascular activity (walking, swimming, cycling) improves heart health, mood and metabolic flexibility, and all of that matters. But when it comes to the composition of weight lost, resistance training is harder to replace. The SURMOUNT-1 trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, reported average weight reductions of around 20–21% at 15mg over 72 weeks, but those figures include lean tissue as well as fat. People who include regular resistance work (bodyweight exercises, bands, weights, Pilates) tend to preserve more muscle during that loss, which keeps resting metabolic rate higher and makes the result more durable.
Two or three sessions a week is enough to make a meaningful difference. You do not need a gym. The goal is to give your muscles a reason to stay while everything else shifts. If joint pain or mobility has held you back from exercise before, losing even 5–10% of body weight tends to reduce that barrier, a motivation that compounds as treatment progresses.
Our guide to maximising results on Mounjaro goes deeper on how activity timing and intensity interact with the dose schedule.
Nausea, loose stools and constipation are the most frequently reported side effects of Mounjaro, especially in the first weeks of a dose step-up. They are also the most common reason people undereat in unhelpful ways, skipping meals entirely, eating nothing but toast, or stopping treatment prematurely.
Smaller, more frequent meals tend to be better tolerated than large ones. Eating slowly, avoiding lying down straight after meals, and steering clear of very fatty or very spiced food during the first week at a new dose all reduce symptom burden noticeably. Cold or room-temperature food is easier to tolerate than very hot food for many people.
If side effects are genuinely severe or persistent, that is a conversation for your prescriber, not something to manage alone and not something to push through indefinitely. Our guide on how to lose weight on tirzepatide also covers how to manage symptoms while keeping your nutrition on track. The NHS tirzepatide patient information page lists common and serious side effects clearly, including the signs that need prompt medical attention. Our prescribers are available seven days a week for aftercare support; contact us if something doesn't feel right.
On the question of cost, if you want to understand how private Mounjaro pricing works before starting, our guide to Mounjaro costs in the UK walks through what legitimate prices include and why the cheapest listing is rarely the safest one.
Mounjaro is licensed as a long-term medicine taken alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. That framing is deliberate: the best results come to people who treat each dose week as one data point, not a pass/fail test.
A week of poor eating during a holiday does not erase months of progress. Missing a workout does not undo lean mass preservation. What erodes results is the all-or-nothing thinking that turns a bad week into an abandoned plan. The appetite suppression Mounjaro provides is a tool; the decision to use that quieter appetite to build sustainable habits is yours.
It is also worth knowing that weight loss is rarely linear on this treatment. Plateaus of two to four weeks are normal, particularly around dose transitions. The mechanism behind why Mounjaro causes weight loss helps explain why this happens, and why patience at those stages is warranted rather than a signal to change course.
