Can pharmacists prescribe Wegovy in the UK?

What the GPhC register tells us about prescribing rights

NHS England's guidance on weight management injections makes clear that semaglutide for weight loss must be initiated and monitored by a suitably qualified clinician. The GPhC annotates qualifying pharmacists with "Independent Prescriber" status on the public register, you can search any pharmacy or individual at pharmacyregulation.org/registers to confirm it. Without that annotation, a pharmacist's legal role is to dispense a prescription written by someone else. That distinction matters enormously when you are trying to work out whether a service offering Wegovy online is operating properly.

Independent Prescriber training typically involves around 90 guided learning hours plus clinical practice hours, assessed at postgraduate level. The pharmacist then takes on full clinical and legal responsibility for prescribing decisions, the same accountability a GP or specialist bears. Where Wegovy sits in the prescribing landscape right now

Wegovy received NICE recommendation in 2023 (TA875) for use within specialist weight management services, for a maximum of two years, in adults with BMI ≥35 and at least one weight-related condition (thresholds are 2.5 kg/m² lower for certain ethnic backgrounds under UK guidance). That NICE recommendation shapes NHS commissioning, not private prescribing, but it signals the clinical standard the evidence supports.

On the NHS, access still runs mostly through specialist services or GP practices participating in the 2026/27 GP contract, and NHS prescribing for Wegovy remains subject to waiting lists and strict eligibility criteria. What a compliant private prescribing process looks like

At a regulated service, the path from enquiry to dispatch follows a specific sequence. You complete a clinical consultation. A GPhC-registered Independent Prescriber (not an automated system) reads your answers, checks your stated medical history, and decides whether Wegovy is clinically appropriate. Choosing a pharmacist prescriber you can verify

The safest starting point is the GPhC register. Any pharmacy offering Wegovy online should have a registered premises number you can look up directly. The MHRA has seized large quantities of fake pens from unregistered sellers, some contained substances they were never labelled as, causing genuine harm.
