Can You Get Wegovy for Free on the NHS?

Step 1: Does the NHS fund Wegovy for weight loss?

Yes, in principle. NICE recommended semaglutide (Wegovy) for weight management in March 2023, and NHS England subsequently began making it available. The catch is that NICE's recommendation in TA875 applies only within specialist weight management services, which typically means a multidisciplinary tier 3 or tier 4 clinic rather than your ordinary GP. Equally important, NICE sets a hard two-year limit on NHS funding, after that, continued prescribing would not normally be supported under the appraisal.

The BMI threshold for NHS eligibility sits at 35 or above, with at least one weight-related condition alongside it. For people from South Asian, Chinese, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean backgrounds, that threshold is reduced by 2.5 kg/m² in line with UK clinical guidance.
