Start journey Learn moreYes — Wegovy is a Prescription-Only Medicine (POM) in the UK, which means a qualified prescriber must assess you and issue a prescription before any pharmacy can legally supply it. There is no way to obtain it without that clinical step, regardless of where you look online. Wegovy (semaglutide) was licensed here for weight management in adults by the MHRA, and that licence comes with a clear requirement: a prescriber (not a checkout process) decides whether it is right for you. If you have come across sellers offering it without a prior assessment, that is a red flag worth taking seriously, as the MHRA's Yellow Card scheme has received reports of counterfeit weight-loss pens causing real harm.

Semaglutide acts on receptors in the gut and brain involved in appetite regulation, slows gastric emptying, and produces significant physiological changes. That power is precisely why it sits in the Prescription-Only category. The UK's Human Medicines Regulations require any medicine with that classification to be assessed by a prescriber who can weigh your individual health picture (existing conditions, other medicines you take, your cardiovascular history) before issuing it.
A common misconception is that the prescription requirement is a formality, a bureaucratic hurdle that exists mainly to drive footfall to clinics. It is not. The prescriber's job is to check that Wegovy is appropriate for you specifically. Conditions such as a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, certain pancreatic problems, or use of medicines that interact with semaglutide are genuine contraindications that a responsible assessment will catch. So the prescription step is also the safety step.
The NHS medicines information on semaglutide sets this out clearly: Wegovy is supplied on prescription following a clinical review, full stop. That applies whether you go through your GP, a specialist weight management service, or a regulated private pharmacy like nume.
The prescription itself carries the same legal standing either way, what differs is the route, the waiting time, and who assesses you. On the NHS, Wegovy (under NICE guideline TA875) is available through specialist weight management services for people who meet specific criteria: a BMI of 35 or above (lower thresholds apply for some ethnic backgrounds) and at least one weight-related health condition, within a service offering multidisciplinary support. NHS waiting lists for these services can be long, and not every area has capacity.
Privately, a regulated online pharmacy can assess you and, if you are clinically suitable, issue a prescription much faster. The eligibility thresholds for a private prescription broadly follow the licensed indications in the Wegovy SmPC: a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to 29.9 with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or obstructive sleep apnoea. You can read more about what that assessment looks like on our Wegovy prescription guide.
One practical point worth knowing: even with a private prescription, the medicine must come from a GPhC-registered pharmacy. You can check any online pharmacy at the GPhC's public register before handing over personal or payment details. nume's registration number is 9012878.
When you complete a consultation (with nume or any other regulated provider) the prescriber is looking at a specific set of things. Your BMI is the starting point, but it is not the whole story. For a private Wegovy prescription, you need to be an adult (18 or over), meet the BMI threshold, and not have any conditions that make semaglutide unsuitable. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, and actively trying to conceive all rule it out; so does a personal or family history of certain thyroid tumours.
Beyond those hard exclusions, the prescriber also considers whether Wegovy is the right choice compared with other licensed options. Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) is the other weight-loss injection currently dispensed through nume, it works on two gut-hormone pathways rather than one, and head-to-head trial data published in the New England Journal of Medicine (SURMOUNT-5, 2025) showed greater average weight loss with tirzepatide at comparable maintenance doses. Which suits you is a clinical call, and our clinical team can talk through both during your assessment.
If you want to understand the BMI side of this in more detail before you start, the BMI requirements for a Wegovy prescription page covers them clearly. And if you are trying to work out how the process unfolds step by step, getting a Wegovy prescription walks through each stage.
Yes, and they are not hypothetical. The MHRA has seized counterfeit weight-loss pens in significant volumes, and some fakes have been found to contain insulin rather than semaglutide, with serious consequences for people who injected them. A seller offering Wegovy without an upfront clinical assessment is either operating illegally or supplying something that is not what it claims to be. Often both.
Price is another signal. Wegovy's list price varies by dose, and legitimate private supplies (which must include clinical assessment, a valid prescription and pharmacy dispensing fees) have a realistic floor. Offers that sit well below that floor without any clinical pathway attached are worth treating with suspicion. Our guide to buying Wegovy in the UK covers what a legitimate transaction looks like and what to watch for. You can also report suspect sellers directly through the MHRA's Yellow Card portal.
For a broader look at weight-loss treatments that are legally available through nume, including both injection and tablet options, our treatment overview is a good place to start.
