Start journey Learn moreYes, Wegovy pens must be kept refrigerated between 2°C and 8°C — that is the primary storage requirement. Once you take a pen out of the fridge, you have a limited window at room temperature before it should be discarded, and the exact length of that window is stated in the Patient Information Leaflet that comes with your medication. Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine; a GPhC-registered prescriber assesses your suitability before any treatment is supplied.

Semaglutide is a protein-based medicine, and like most biologics it is sensitive to temperature extremes. Keeping a Wegovy pen at temperatures above the permitted room-temperature limit (or leaving it in a hot car, a sunny windowsill, or a bathroom that steams up regularly) can break down the active ingredient. A degraded pen may look completely normal. The liquid is still clear; the pen still clicks. There is no reliable way to tell by eye that the medicine has lost potency, which is exactly why the storage rules matter.
Freezing is equally damaging. A pen that has accidentally been pushed to the back of the fridge shelf and partially frozen should not be used. If you are unsure whether your pen has been frozen, contact our clinical team rather than injecting with a pen you cannot vouch for. The NHS medicines page for semaglutide advises patients to check storage conditions carefully and to speak to a pharmacist if they have any doubt.
One practical habit worth building: every time you take your pen out of the fridge, note the date on the box or in your phone, and if you find yourself wondering whether Wegovy is kept in the fridge as a general rule, our dedicated page covers the full storage requirement in plain terms. That makes it straightforward to stay within the room-temperature window without relying on memory.
Plenty of people on Wegovy travel for work or take holidays, and the pen does not have to stay fridge-bound the entire time. The medicine's licence allows a defined period at room temperature, typically up to 30°C, before the pen must be discarded if not used. The precise number of days is printed in the leaflet inside your pack, it can vary between batches and between the different pen strengths, so the leaflet for your specific pen is the authority, not a figure quoted online.
For longer trips, a small insulin travel cooler or a cool bag with an ice pack (never ice touching the pen directly) keeps things within the 2–8°C range. Airports are generally fine: security X-rays do not affect the medicine, and medical liquids are exempt from the 100ml rule when you carry a prescription letter. If you are planning a trip and want to think through the logistics, our frequently asked questions cover travel in more detail, and our aftercare team is reachable seven days a week.
It is also worth knowing that if a pen has been kept at room temperature for its full permitted window, the clock does not reset if you put it back in the fridge, and our page on whether Wegovy needs to be kept in the fridge explains exactly what that means for day-to-day handling. Once the window closes, the pen should be discarded regardless of where it has been stored since.
It does shape the logistics of getting the medicine to you safely, which is one reason to pay attention to how an online pharmacy handles cold-chain delivery. Wegovy pens are temperature-sensitive in transit as much as at home, and if you want a clear answer to whether Wegovy has to be stored in the fridge, our overview sets out the rules alongside practical guidance for when a fridge is not immediately available. At nume, pens are dispatched from our GPhC-registered pharmacy in temperature-controlled packaging via DPD's next-working-day tracked service, arriving in plain unbranded packaging. Orders placed by 12pm Monday to Friday are dispatched the same day, once a GPhC-registered prescriber has reviewed your consultation.
If you are curious about the broader picture of how Wegovy works as a weight-management treatment (the mechanism, the dose schedule, the clinical evidence) that is covered in full on our Wegovy overview. And if storage questions have come up because you are comparing options, our page on semaglutide versus other weight-loss injections sets out the differences factually.
For proper disposal, used pens and needles should go into a sharps container, never into household waste or a recycling bin. Your local council or GP surgery can advise on collection points.
Storage questions can feel minor, but two situations genuinely warrant a conversation with a clinician. First: if you have used a pen that you now suspect was stored incorrectly, especially if you experience an unusual injection-site reaction or feel the dose had no effect. Second: if a change in your circumstances (a house move, a long trip, a broken fridge) means you cannot maintain the storage conditions going forward, and you want to plan around that rather than improvise.
The Wegovy SmPC on the eMC is the definitive reference for prescribers and pharmacists; it sets out the full storage specification alongside the clinical data. If you have not yet started treatment and are weighing up whether Wegovy fits your situation, checking your eligibility with a prescriber costs nothing and takes a few minutes. Questions about cost are also reasonable, our page on Wegovy pricing in the UK explains what private treatment typically involves and what a quoted price should include. When you are ready, you can check your eligibility and our prescribers will review your consultation the same day.
