Start journey Learn moreYes, Wegovy does need to be kept in the fridge. Semaglutide injection pens should be stored at 2–8°C before first use, protected from light and away from the freezer compartment. Once you have started a pen, there is a limited window during which it can be kept at room temperature — the exact duration is set out in the Patient Information Leaflet that comes with your pen, and that leaflet is the source you should follow. As a prescription-only medicine, Wegovy is only available following a clinical assessment by a registered prescriber; storage questions are among the first practical things our prescribers cover once treatment is confirmed.

The moment your Wegovy delivery arrives, the pens go straight into the fridge. The licensed storage condition for unused semaglutide injection pens is 2–8°C, which is a standard domestic fridge temperature. Keep the pens in their original packaging to protect them from light, and store them away from the ice compartment or freezer drawer, freezing inactivates the medicine, and a pen that has been frozen even briefly should not be used.
Place them somewhere stable in the fridge body, not in the door shelf where the temperature fluctuates every time the door opens. The milk shelf is a reasonable spot. You do not need a dedicated medical fridge for this; an ordinary kitchen fridge set to its standard temperature is fine, provided it is not running too cold. The Wegovy SmPC on the electronic Medicines Compendium (eMC) carries the manufacturer's full storage specifications if you want to check the precise parameters.
A question our prescribers hear most weeks is whether the pens can go in the garage fridge in summer, and if you want a thorough answer to whether Wegovy has to be kept in the fridge at all times, we cover that in full detail separately. If it cycles above or below that range, keep the pens in your main kitchen fridge instead.
Once you have taken a pen out and started using it, the rules change. Semaglutide does not require refrigeration for the remainder of the pen's life, provided you stay within the time and temperature limits stated in the Patient Information Leaflet. The NHS's semaglutide medicine page confirms that a pen in use can be stored below 30°C for a specified period, after which it should be discarded even if doses remain.
We deliberately do not print the exact number of days here, because that figure belongs in the leaflet you receive with your prescription, it is the authoritative source, and it can be updated if the manufacturer revises storage guidance. Read it, note the date you first used the pen, and keep to the window. Many people find it helpful to write the start date on the pen's label with a marker.
If you are unsure whether a room-temperature pen is still within its window, err on the side of starting a fresh pen. A degraded dose is a missed dose with added risk. Questions about your specific pen or situation belong to your prescriber or pharmacist, not a forum.
Travel is where Wegovy storage gets most complicated in practice. For short journeys (a day trip, a commute) a pen that is already in use and within its room-temperature window can simply come with you. For longer trips, especially those involving flights or hot climates, you need a plan.
A small medical cool bag with an ice pack keeps pens below 8°C without freezing them. Avoid placing the pen directly against ice or a frozen pack; wrap it in a cloth first. On a flight, keep pens in your cabin bag, hold luggage can reach sub-zero temperatures in the cargo hold, and frozen pens are unusable. At your destination, a hotel mini-fridge is typically fine, and if you want to know more about whether Wegovy is kept in the fridge throughout its use, we cover the detail separately, though it is worth checking the thermostat is not set lower than 2°C.
If you are looking at where to source Wegovy ahead of a trip, timing your supply so a fresh pen is available after you return is often simpler than managing cold-chain logistics across multiple time zones. Our clinical team is available seven days a week to answer practical questions like these once you are a patient.
Separately, if you are planning any kind of surgery around the same time as your Wegovy treatment, the NHS advises informing your anaesthetist and surgical team that you take semaglutide, gastric emptying is slowed, which is relevant to anaesthetic risk. That is a different issue from storage, but worth flagging here as another practical step in managing your treatment safely.
If you find a pen that was accidentally left on the counter overnight, or you discover it was pushed against the freezer compartment, the right step is to check the Patient Information Leaflet before using it. For pens that were frozen, the guidance is clear: do not use them. Freezing can cause protein aggregation in the semaglutide formulation, the pen may look normal, feel normal and click normally, but the medicine itself may have degraded.
For pens left at room temperature, the question is whether they were still within the allowed out-of-fridge window. If you are confident they were, they are likely fine. If you are not sure, contact your prescribing pharmacy for advice rather than guessing. You can also explore the broader picture of how Wegovy works and what affects its effectiveness to put storage in context, temperature is one of the more controllable variables.
If a pen has clearly been compromised, do not put it in general household waste. Dispose of it via a sharps container and return it to a pharmacy for safe disposal. The MHRA also operates a Yellow Card scheme for reporting suspected quality defects with medicines, including cases where a medicine may have deteriorated due to supply or storage problems.
For context on how long Wegovy can safely be kept out of the fridge, or on whether Wegovy needs to be in the fridge throughout your treatment, the details are covered separately. The short version: refrigeration before use is essential; room-temperature tolerance after starting a pen is real but time-limited and temperature-capped.
Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine for weight management, available privately through a regulated online pharmacy following clinical assessment. If you would like to explore whether it might be suitable for you, you can check your eligibility with our prescribers at no cost.
