Freeze dried semaglutide: separating the facts from the hype

Freeze drying (lyophilisation) is a manufacturing technique, not a licensed treatment format for weight loss in the UK.
Semaglutide is licensed for UK weight management only as Wegovy, a ready-to-inject subcutaneous pen, not as a powder, capsule or compounded preparation.
Products marketed as "freeze dried semaglutide" are not approved by the MHRA for weight loss and may pose serious safety risks.
The only legal route to semaglutide for weight management in the UK is a prescription issued after a proper clinical assessment.

You may have come across the term "freeze dried semaglutide" while researching weight-loss medicines online. It refers to a powder form of semaglutide produced through lyophilisation, a process used in pharmaceutical manufacturing. It is not a licensed weight-loss product in the UK, and it is not the same thing as Wegovy, the approved injectable semaglutide. Understanding the difference matters, because prescription-only medicines can only legally be supplied following a clinical assessment by a qualified prescriber.

What the science actually says about freeze dried semaglutide, and what UK patients should do instead

You found a product online claiming to be freeze dried semaglutide — here is what that actually means

Picture this: a quick search for Wegovy alternatives throws up listings for "freeze dried semaglutide" in small vials, sometimes sold alongside mixing instructions. At first glance it sounds almost clinical — the word "semaglutide" is right there, and lyophilisation really is a technique used in pharmaceutical labs. So what is actually in these vials, and why does the distinction matter so much?

Lyophilisation removes water from a biological compound under vacuum and very low temperatures, leaving a dry powder that is easier to store and ship. Pharmaceutical companies use this process during development and for certain injectable medicines. The technique itself is legitimate. What is not legitimate is sourcing a raw peptide powder, marketing it as semaglutide, and selling it to members of the public for self-injection or reconstitution at home. The MHRA has not approved any freeze dried semaglutide preparation for weight management in the UK. Full stop.

Critically, there is no way for a person buying one of these products to verify what is actually inside the vial. Independent laboratory testing of unlicensed weight-loss products sold online has repeatedly found contamination, incorrect dosing, or entirely different compounds. The risk profile is not theoretical. The MHRA has seized large quantities of fake and unlicensed weight-loss medicines, and some contained insulin rather than the claimed active ingredient. You can report any suspect product at the MHRA Yellow Card scheme, which handles both side-effect reports and suspected counterfeit medicines.

Why freeze dried semaglutide is not the same as the licensed product

Wegovy, the semaglutide medicine licensed by the MHRA for weight management, is supplied as a sterile, pre-filled, ready-to-use pen. It contains a precisely measured dose, manufactured under strict quality controls, with the correct inactive ingredients and a validated shelf-life. The approved semaglutide formulation has been through rigorous clinical trials, the STEP 1 study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, showed an average body-weight reduction of around 15% over 68 weeks at the 2.4 mg maintenance dose alongside lifestyle changes.

Freeze dried powders sold outside the licensed supply chain have none of that assurance. The peptide may be impure, underdosed, overdosed, or entirely mislabelled. Even if the active compound were genuine, reconstituting it correctly at home requires sterile water, accurate measuring equipment and aseptic technique. A tiny error in concentration produces a dose that is either ineffective or dangerous. This is why semaglutide is a prescription-only medicine (POM) in the UK: it is not a supplement that can be taken on a best-guess basis.

There is also a legal point worth being direct about. Supplying a POM without a valid UK prescription is illegal under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012. Sellers of freeze dried semaglutide are operating outside that framework entirely, which is why they can offer these products without any clinical assessment.

Storage, stability and why the question sometimes comes up legitimately

Some people searching for "freeze dried semaglutide" are not looking for an unlicensed product at all. They have read that semaglutide degrades without refrigeration and are wondering whether a lyophilised version might travel better or survive a power cut. That is a reasonable question, and it is worth answering properly.

The licensed Wegovy pen must be stored in a fridge between 2°C and 8°C before first use. Once in use, it can be kept at room temperature for a limited period, the exact window is set out in the Patient Information Leaflet and the Wegovy SmPC on the eMC, and those are the sources to follow rather than any general figure. If you are worried about storage during travel or around the holidays (say you are going somewhere remote in August or your plans fall awkwardly close to a bank holiday) it is worth discussing that with your prescriber before you travel, not improvising with an unlicensed alternative. Our page on whether you can freeze Wegovy covers the storage questions in more detail.

It is also worth knowing that Wegovy is not the only form of licensed semaglutide for weight management in the UK. As of summer 2026, the MHRA has approved an oral semaglutide tablet for weight loss as well, which requires no refrigeration, a practical answer for some patients' storage concerns, made through the proper clinical and regulatory route.

The safe, legal route to semaglutide in the UK

If you are considering semaglutide for weight management, the path is straightforward. A prescriber assesses your medical history, current medicines, BMI and any relevant health conditions, then issues a prescription if clinically suitable. You can read about the cost of treatment on our Wegovy prices page, which sets out what a legitimate private prescription includes and what the market looks like. The NHS route also exists, though access is phased and waiting times vary significantly, our guide to accessing Wegovy on the NHS explains the current eligibility thresholds under NICE guidance.

At nume, every consultation is read by a GPhC-registered Independent Prescriber, a real clinician, not an automated decision tree. If you order before 12pm Monday to Friday and are approved, your medicine is dispatched the same day via tracked DPD delivery, arriving the next working day in plain packaging. There are no subscriptions and no hidden fees. Every repeat order goes through a fresh clinical review.

Freeze dried semaglutide sold outside the licensed supply chain is not a shortcut. It is a different product entirely, with no clinical evidence behind it and no regulatory oversight. If you would like to explore licensed semaglutide treatment, speak to our prescribers through a free consultation.
